To Nardil users - how is it going for you?

Posted by Michael Bell on January 17, 2010, at 23:16:36

I'm just curious how the Nardil is going with everyone. I am currently on four meds and I think Nardil could do the job of three of them. Please, if you do respond, indicate what you use it for and if you also are on any other meds. Thanks

I take 60mg for dysthymia and social anxiety. It worked very well for over a year, now it seems to be losing effectiveness. I take it with 5mg olanzapine, which helps combat the insomnia nardil causes. Olanzapine helps to augment the antidepressant effect of the nardil too, which is the reason I take it.

I take 60mg Nardil for dysthymia along with 900mg Lithium to augment it. I am doing pretty well with it, much better than before taking Nardil. I still have mood dips for periods of time and am usually not in a "bright," chirpy mood ever. And then I still I have anhedonia. I may need to add a third med. My appointment is tomorrow. Let's see. But Nardil has been very helpful for sure, once the side effects past.

Hi atypical, can you post how your appointment went and whether you are now augmenting the nardil?. I want to add a third agent as, like you, I experience anhedonia and don't feel depression free. Thanks. Julie

Julie, the doctor is increasing the Lithium from 900mg to 1050mg since my level is a little low (.56). It should be between .6 and .8. I hope this helps with the "residual" symptoms.

Hello Michael,
until recently I was on Lamictal 200mg and Nardil 75mg. I felt that the Lamictal was unnecessary and so I came off it. I hit the floor a few times and got scared but - touch wood - it's working out and overall I feel better. Less drugged and fewer of the persistent side effects I was experiencing. Somnolence has improved as has muscle strength/energy.

To be frank, Nardil has given me life. For 13 years I've been very depressed and nothing I'd tried had done much at all. Nardil is like night and day. I still have many many problems, anxiety, depression, OCD and still have bad times. However, it's a fraction of what I was experiencing before. It's my wonder drug.

Pete

Hi Pete & Michael,
I've been on Nardil for most of the past 12 years. I have stopped a half dozen times for other med trials (45+ combinations), and just to wash out. Every time my major depression has returned within a few months. I have been augmenting with 2mg of clonazepam for the anxiety and social phobia. I am in the process of cutting down the clonazepam, just because of the memory problems (CRS).

Nardil is the only med that has ever worked for me. Funny, a 50 year old medication, and the only one that works. I'm done trying to quit. I just went back up to 75mg because I was starting to feel the depression sneak back in at 60mg. The side effects are worse at the higher dosages. My worst ones are weight gain, insomnia, and delayed orgasm. But guess what, major depression is worse.

I always have a residual level of dysthymia even on Nardil. If anyone can suggest an augmentation to help with that, I would appreciate it. My diagnosis is treatment resistant, atypical, double depression with social anxiety.

In the past I have augmented Nardil with bupropion, nortriptyline, trazodone for sleep and quitiapine(Seroquel)for sleep. The bupropion, though contraindicated, helped with the weight gain from Nardil.

Baring some kind of medical breakthrough, I am a lifer on Nardil. The major depressions are just too painful and dangerous.
Be Well,
Jedi

How about adding lamictal or tegretol? Though mood stabilizers they may add an ad effect. Also would your doctor consider a stim such as ritalin?

Thanks Bulldog, My MD does not want to mix any stimulant with Nardil. He just doesn't have the expertise. I'm in a small town and the mental health options are really limited.

I've studied the newer mood stabilizers and will look into Lamictal as an option for augmentation.
Thanks again,
Jedi
