benzodiazepines and depression?

Posted by Roslynn on January 18, 2010, at 11:58:49

Does anyone know if benzodiazepines such as Ativan really make depression worse over the long term?

If so, what are you supposed to do if benzos are the only things that lessen unbearable anxiety for you?

Does the fact that you need to use a benzodiazepine mean your other meds need to be adjusted, or that your other meds are not doing the job?

Thank you for any insight on this.

Which came first I feel this has a great bearing as for me Gad and panic are my primaries. I get down when they don't work. So for me only klonopin depresses me. How high is your dose also plays a part so many different doses. Ativan didn't depress me long time ago took it. Love Phillipa

monotherapy of xanax worsened my condition--that's what I was taking when I had my first major episode

I'm still trying to figure this out. I take xanax xr daily w/ adjunct regular xanax as needed. Took some an hour ago in fact :)

If I find anything out next week at my consult, I'll pass it on to you.

Best to you Roslynn,

fb

I concur w/ Phillipa. Klonopin, while it delivered excellent prophylactic anxiety control, for me, it was a depressant.

Dear Floatingbridge and Phillipa,

Thank you for your responses. I too am wondering, well, what is left for me to take for that unbearable anxiety that comes on sometimes. My pdoc did mention antipsychotics as a possibility but I don't want to go that route cause they all knock me out like someone hit me with a hammer.

Thanks again,
Roslynn

I tried a few AP's, and they did not work--and had adverse effects. None for me, thanks. Hope that's not what they suggest at my consult. (Though they help lots here on Babble.) I'm thinking MAOI for one stop shopping--depression and anxiety control all in one. Maybe a bit extreme....

One you could get fat, one could cause aggitation, hence still think EMsam bypasses guy no weight gain and supplement with benzos if needed for a while. Love Phillipa ps we're all different for sure.

You've hit the nail on the head.
I think there is no satisfactory pharmacological answer to your question.
There may (or may not) be be satisfactory non-pharmacological answers.
I wouldn't do it again. No way.
