Klonopin

Posted by shakeyboy on November 5, 2009, at 13:55:01

Hi, I have struggled with anxiety for most of my life, ever since age 15 or before.Diagnosed with Panic Disorder and GAD.First took xanax at 24.Worked for 2 years and pooped out.Was stable until 28 then had another bout of panic and anxiety and was put on Tranxene. It was a godsend.I used it for 15 years as needed and lived a normal life until it stopped working 6 years ago. Then started Ativan for six months but was so addictive had to quit and went through 2 months of hellish withdrawl.Since then I have been on the SSRI roller coaster which only makes my anxiety worse. Finally was put on Klonopin (CLONAZEPAM)4 years ago.I take .5 mg twice a day as needed. It helps but not nearly as much as Tranxene did.I only take it for a few days at a time because I am scared of tolerance and withdrawl.I hear that Klonopin works best if it is in your system for a long time at a stable dose.My Pdoc is not a benzophobic thank god and I am considering asking to try it long term.
Has anyone been on Klonopin long term and at what dose? Did you have good results?

Welcome to Psycho Babble!

I like Klonopin because the effects last longer than the other benzos. I was on a high dosage for a number years. The only reason I came off it was because it was causing my depression to be worse which is common with benzos. I think you will like this med. It takes longer to kick in than the other benzos though.

Good luck with it!

Forgot to mention my dosage. I started at .5 mg but built a tolerance to it and 10 years later I was on 4 mg which is a hefty dose. That's the problem with benzos, you always need more!

Welcome here!
I am on klonopin but only 2mg (for around 2 years) and that too only to sleep.
I personally develop tolerance to benzo's really fast and get addicted.
Sorry I can't be of much help.

How long does it take Klonopin to be effective for anxiety?

I find it a bit sedating but I guess that will wear off if I take it for a couple of weeks. Will it kick in after that to keep me stable all day?

It should be kicking by now to keep you stable. It doesn't usually take that long. I wonder if you need to be on a higher dose.

Yes, agree with Maxime--maybe a slightly higher dose will make the difference. It kept me stable.

4mg/day.... you consider it as a high dose??????????

My god... i'm not normal, I take 10 mg day of it and feel nothing now...

Was on 20mg of Valium last winter... after the Parnate and Clomipramine BAD experiences... I ask to be put again on the Rivotril... Start at 4mg day... call the PDoc the week after and ask for 8mg... he agree... and now i'm taking 10mg day... and feel that I need maybe another 4 mg...

Tolerance developp rapidly on that one... less addictive than the Xanax, but less effective also... you always need more... and at the end, severals months after, they stop working...

I hate benzo drugs!!!!

Vincent worked very well for me for at least 35 years. Doses up and down but never high. No cravings ever? Phillipa
