Sleep Meds + Urinary Incontinence

Posted by BearNCrow on October 12, 2009, at 17:23:13

Please help! I am bipolar, not actively manic but am suffering from insomnia. I'm barely getting any sleep and I worry that this is going to make me crazy by pushing me into mania or depression. My p-doc put me on Trazadone 300-450mg to help me sleep. I would sleep deeply for only several hours; however, I would relax so much that I would empty my bladder in bed in my sleep without waking up. She switched me to Neurontin 1200mg and the same thing has happened. So I am stopping Neurontin effective immediately. My p-doc is increasing my Risperdal from 4mg to 6mg tonight (I was recently as high as 8mg) in hopes that it will help me sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions of meds I could take that will help me sleep without relaxing me so much and putting me in such a deep sleep that I pee the bed?!?!? I'm also taking Lithium 1800mg, Klonopin 2mg, Lexapro 5mg, all at night, and none are new meds for me. Please help!

I forgot to mention that I am seeing a urologist tomorrow. But I don't think there is anything physically wrong. It has only happened when I have taken meds designed to be sleep aids.

But there may be a med you can take to stop the night time problem? Phillipa

True, and I will find that out tomorrow. But what worries me is that both Trazodone and Neurontin, both supposedly powerful sleep aids, only bought me a few good hours of sleep a night. My pdoc worries that Trazodone will make me manic because it is also an anti-depressant. I'm so freaked out about my night time problem that I am afraid to increase my Risperdal by 2mg tonight, but I will because I am so desperate for sleep. I'm afraid of Ambien and the like as well. I hate to take medication for the incontinence when it is so obviously only caused by the sleep aids. It simply doesn't happen when I don't take sleep aids. I feel like I'm really in a bind!

300-450mg of trazadone is a lot of trazadone. Have you tried a lower dose? Like 150-200mg?

450mg only gets me about 4 hours of sleep, so i never took anything lower than 300mg.

Get some sleep and worry about it tomorrow. Maybe there will be an answer? You can't help it if you can't sleep. Love Phillipa

Just an update. I didn't take any Trazodone or Neurontin last night. I did go up to 6mg of Risperdal from 4mg. And I slept really well! Close to 12 hours actually. I woke up a few times but was able to go back to sleep. And there was no nighttime urinary incontinence! Oh happy day! So Risperdal at a higher dose seems to help me more than a sleep aid at sleeping.

I had extensive tests at the urologist today. Turns out I have a distended bladder and severe stress urinary incontinence which explains everything. Going to have surgery soon to correct the problem. See new thread called "Upcoming Surgery - How to Stabilize Mood Post-Op?" I would appreciate any advice anyone has!
