Tried to Go Back on Remeron And It Doesn't Work

Posted by Karen's World on September 3, 2009, at 11:06:43

I was on Remeron - 30 mg for approximately three years. It worked great as a sleep med. I slept like a baby for three whole years. The drawback for me was the weight gain and my husband said it made me toss and turn all night long. So, I went off of it - which wasn't a pleasant process! However, now, five years later, I desperately need something to help me sleep that doesn't ruin my memory (Ambien). Anyway, when I try to go back on Remeron, it works the first night, but the second night it doesn't put me to sleep and I get terrible RLS. I never had this problem for the three years that I was on it. Does anyone know why this might be happening? Do I just need to hang with it past the two day mark?

I guess I should add that I was (and still am) on Celexa as well. I tried Remeron once by itself and it did nothing.

I'm just puzzled by this change in my response to it.

Maybe you should try 15 mg instead of 30 mg. It's more sedating at a lower dosage.

maybe hte RLS is causing the problem, and you need something to reduce that for the remeron to work, especially if it is makign the RLS worse

The Remeron brings on the RLS. I don't have it otherwise. I guess I could take another pill for the RLS, but I hate to. I just find it very puzzling that it worked so well before, but this second time around, I can't tolerate it past the first night.

Remeron induced restless legs is not an uncommon experience. So you certainly are not an oddball case in that regard. Longterm usage of ssris can also contribute, due to lessening of dopamine function. The primary meds for restless legs are dopamine agonists.

7.5mg may prove to be a more potent sleeping dose than 15mg or 30mg.

It is my opinion that previous med usage often causes permanent or longterm changes in genes or receptors that make a return to that med different than the first time. Not always, but often.

Our bodies and brains are not static. In other words, aging happens. We are never the same as we used to be. Your biology was probably different when you took remeron the first time. Time has passed. Things are differnt. It is like hitting a moving target. Things do not stand still in the human body as time elapses.

I don't have any good suggestions to counter the restless legs because I do not believe in piling meds on top of each other chasing an endless rainbow. Simply put, if a med is causing restless legs, it doing something wrong. We don't want to be ingesting something that is doing something wrong.

Experiment with other sleep aids. Magnesium, melatonin, gaba+glycine, ultra low dose remeron, ultra low dose seroquel, lunesta, klonopin, valerian, skullcap, I mean, there is no shortage of things to try, including biologically natural, herbal, and meds.

Longterm changes in the genes? Yikes! I've been on Celexa for many years - like 10, and it still works for my depression, but I think it may be causing insomnia. That's why I wanted to start up the Remeron again. I hate being on meds, but it's been a necessity for me. I wonder if Deplin would help the Remeron work better? Does anyone know if this food med really works?

Thanks to all for their responses!

Insomia is pretty common with Celexa. Try a lower dose of Remeron--even 7.5mg may do the trick with sleep with less of the RLS.

I'll try the 7.5 mg of Remeron. Celexa didn't cause insomnia initially, but I've been taking it for years now (approx. 7 years) and maybe my neurotransmitters have changed. I really don't know what these drugs are doing to me. All I know is if I try to go off of my AD, I have a meltdown a couple of months later.

What do y'all know about Remeron? Is it a joke? Does it help with a scattered brain that's damaged? Wtf. What about sleep and slowing down the brain? IDK. Meds don't do anything. Haldol is terrible. IDK what benztropine or Requip did. I was only on the Requip bc of Haldol and restlessness. IDK. I'm frustrated.
