Emsam 12 mg. patches no longer being made?

Posted by lunksmoo on September 5, 2009, at 11:53:08

I just went to my pharmacy after putting in an online order for the 12 mg. patches of Emsam. This morning the pharmacist told me they are no longer making the 12 mg. patch, and they were going to call my doctor. So now what am I going to do, use 2 - 6 mg. patches a day? 6 mg. patches were $120/month copay on my insurance a few months ago, so is it going to cost me $240 a month now? The 12 mg. patches were a $134 copay. Great.

Really? Did you pharmacist say why? I'd think the drug company could help. Is it that the patch is so expensive? Well something has to work wonder if on a google search. Phillipa

I tried google can't find a thing about the 12mg being discontinued. See online sales for it????? Maybe not released this info to public yet? Phillipa

I just went to Emsam.com; it says the website is "under construction", and it only lists the 6 mg. patches.

I would call the company that makes them. Sounds like a scam the pharmacist is pulling on you.

This is the nation's largest pharmacy; I won't mention the name, but it begins with a "W". I just tried calling Dey Pharmaceuticals; they are closed for the Holiday weekend. I need the prescription today; I am about to run out today. Holding it over the weekend won't do. Maybe I will call the pharmacy's national helpline.

Sometimes an ethical pharmacist will charge you the same as the price of a 12 mg patch. Your script calls for 12 mg. They do not have that strenth but 2 6 mg will do the trick. So you should be charged for a 12 mg patch!! Tell him that is not your fault that they don't have them in stock.

I only know one person on the 12 mg patch and she's ill right now. I'll do some more searching later. Sometimes the internet google is slower to show the change since it's a holiday weekend as well. Yes call and please let us know. Love Phillipa

I called the pharmacy national hotline, and Dey Pharmaceuticals; and both places the employees are gone for the holiday weekend.

I just bought a package of 6 mg patches today at the pharmacy for $134.95 (20% copay) to get me through a while; I see my doctor this week. She said she may have some extras to get me through for a while until this discontinuation mystery is solved.

Funny, last month when I bought the 12 mg Emsam patches, my insurance copay for those was $134.95 also. Hmmmm.......

Well I would try another pharmacy asap.

If the company isn't making the 12 mg patch, my pharmacy certainly neglected to mention it to me. So did my pdoc. And since he just two weeks ago sent me a new prescription for the 12 mg patch, I would hope he would have brought it up.

So I'm having a little difficulty understanding what you pharmacist is talking about-- other than that he just doesn't have it right now.

I went to take my prescription for 6mg patches at CVS and they told me that the pharmaceutical company was shipping their patches only to certain pharmacies and that they (CVS/Eckerds) may not be able to carry it. I'm waiting for the pharmacy to call to see if they were able to get them. It all sounded very strange to me.

GOOD NEWS! I JUST CALLED 866-367-2678 CUSTOMER SERVICE (ON THE EMSAM.COM SITE) AND THEY SAID THAT EMSAM 12 MG IS **NOT** BEING DISCONTINUED, BUT THAT ONLY THE NDC# HAS CHANGED FROM BRISTOL MEYERS TO DEY. EMSAM 12 MG WILL CONTINUE TO BE AVAILABLE. I TOLD HER THAT THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT DISSEMINATED PROPERLY SINCE SOME PHARMACISTS ARE TELLING DOCTORS THAT EMSAM 12 MG IS DISCONTINUED, WHICH IS NOT TRUE, SINCE ONLY THE NDC# HAS CHANGED. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL IN GETTING THE MEDICATION/DOSAGE YOU NEED!
