What TCA goes best with NARDIL? Is it Nortrip?

Posted by UGottaHaveHope on August 10, 2009, at 0:54:18

I have seen all this talk on here about Parnate + Notriptyline.

What, in your opinion, is the best TCA to mix with NARDIL? And at what dosage?

Thanks

Well, I haven't been on Nardil, but I recommend that you and your psychiatrist consider desipramine. I like it. But probably try the Nardil on its own first. (Maybe you have and I am unaware?) I have heard of others who actively disliked the desipramine, so, I guess it has wide variability. One reply to me before here on PsychoBabble did give me pause; the guy said it brought out massive anger in him. Desipramine has a HUGE dose range. If I recall correctly, the pills start at 10 mg and go to at least 100 mg. I am on three 100 mg pills/day. I do have to have a beta blocker to calm down my heart's response to it, and to decrease the desipramine-caused anxiety.
I think desipramine is not known to act on serotonin (just norepinephrine), so that is why I believe it is safe with MAOI, even though some computer systems may have a blanket warning saying all tricyclics are contraindicated with MAOIs, because of fear of serotonin syndrome.

'with the exception of clomipramine, tca's are generally safe with maoi's...both amitriptyline and nortriptyline have had no special adverse effects. both drugs are good hypnotics and safe in combination, but one should beginwith a low dose, 25 mg, if the patient is improving on an maoi but has insomnia.' this information is from an article written by drs cole and bodkin in 'current psychiatry', vol 1., no. 6/june 2002.

Imipramine + Nardil = serotonin syndrome. I'm not sure about amitriptyline, but I would think it is too potent a reuptake inhibitor of serotonin.

The only two I would play with are desipramine and nortriptyline.

Doxepin and trimipramine might be OK, but I have no personal experience with them.

Parnate seems to be more forgiving. You might be able to get away with combining imipramine with this drug. I can't be sure, but I think I tried it once without adverse effect. However, I don't recommend taking the risk.

still in remission if that is what you call it. just like cancer, even when in remission you think about it all the time.

at least my job is stressful enough to keep my mind off of relapsing.

had some rough times a few months ago, but made a med change that has proven beneficial, i think, since i have been on a good run for a few months.

now on nardil and wellbutrin xl. had taken nardil plus a stim but reread the article on maos and saw that wellbutrin plus nardil was ok, so wrote to the authors of the article to confirm this combinatin and was given the go ahead.

i mean this is all just one big experiment and for myself, i have had to take the lead to find solutions since just blindly following my pdoc's suggestions and advice has not always been successful.

hope you are well and enjoying life as much as you can. one day at a time. congrats on your new grand daughter. the circle of life continues even if we don't always feel part of it.

what my mother always said, as i know she experienced depression long before it was popular to share everything with everyone, like today...she would say 'hell is right here on earth'. that sounds pretty depressed to me. she never liked anyone to experience any happiness and she made sure of that!!!
