depression and appetite

Posted by g_g_g_unit on August 8, 2009, at 22:15:57

when people say the lose their appetite when depressed, is it that the thought of food repulses them or that they simply don't feel hungry?

i was given a proton-pump inhibitor for reflux, but i only experience the symptoms sporadically (and in fact they had mostly disappeared at one point). they're pretty bad now because i wake up not feeling like eating at all, but then again part of me also compulsively likes to eat (due to blood sugar issues), so i'll eat (or overeat) regardless and then find it hard to digest, etc.

i don't want to be on omeprazole for long because it screws with mineral & b12 absorption. so what's the solution? just don't eat if you don't feel like it?

Personally, I love balsamic vinegar. It could get expensive I guess. You could combine a teaspoon with a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil everyday or when you have bad heartburn.

When you are that depressed, you simply don't feel hungry. Everyone reacts differently to depression and has different types of depression as you already know.

Yeah I guess up to 3 or 4 tablespoons of vinegar may not only help your cravings but also you acid reflux/heartburn. I guess you kill acid with acid.

Hi Morgan,

You know alot about alt. remedies! I think that balsamic vinegar, esp. a good one is milder, somehow different from others. And don't try with white vinegar!

If I get really depresed, it is mainly the anxiety which supresses the appetite. I am in constant fight or flight and just not hungry. Then there is the issue too that food is not that appealing anyway.

You don't feel hungry, just pain.

Yea, when it's bad, I can't eat--however, it's also further destabilizing to lose weight rapidly. Last time my doc told me to drink Ensure drinks (you know, a meal in a can--chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry). I found a protein powder w/ minerals etc that I liked instead. It is important to sustain one's self in a crisis.

Formerly depression and anxiety never really dampened my desire for food. Now that I am in adrenal burnout or severe major depression I guess food just makes me nauseus. I simply cannot eat very much or I feel really sick.
