Need help.. zero social life!

Posted by englishman006 on July 14, 2009, at 9:39:18

I hardley ever go out / attend parties, as I cannot drink! Just half a beer and I become withdrawn and socially anxious! On a day to day basis I get by; the meds I take have reduced my social anxiety to a managable level.
However, since I started the meds some 6 years ago, I have had the return of mild apathy. That's why I would really value the occassional night out with friends, and join them in a drink.
Going to a party or to a bar just isn't the same when all you can drink are cups of tea!!
I suspect one or more of my meds is to blame for removing the rewarding effects of alcohol.

This is a list of the meds I'm taking.

Can anyone spot the culprit??

Dexamphetamine 60mg

Memantine 20mg

Fluoxetine 20mg

Amisulpride 50mg

Lamotrigine 200mg

Any ideas guys? ...I'd really apreciate any suggestions,
thanks,
Shaun.

Seriously you mean alchohol no longer gives relaxing good feelings? I remember when I used to drink beers with benzos and paxil and felt great. Interesting wonder if it's the different source of antidepressants. I heard a long time ago many years that alchohol negated the effects of an antidepressant true or not I don't know. Totally with you on this one. Maybe we should organise a psychobabble tea party; first friday of the month.

I take effexor + zyban and although i haven't experimented much, i remember on cymbalta a couple of sips of champagne at a party once was instant death.

Ime psych meds and alcohol are opposing forces

Any SSRI's are the devil for emotions! Serotonin up=apathy. GABA sometimes can make you too mellow. If you come visit me in Denmark we can be apathetic together and have a great aphetic time!

is it that half a beer triggers anxiety, or that by the time you've had half a beer the social anxiety makes itself known?

if you wouldn't feel anxious if you weren't drinking beer, let your friends know that beer is against doctor's orders and drink something else while they drink beer.

if the social anxiety itself is the issue, though, that's a whole new question. i would think the dex could provoke anxiety.
