Anxiety Meta Thread!!!

Posted by garnet71 on May 23, 2009, at 20:52:18

I'm putting together one thread of anxiety remedies since it seems to be the topic of the day!! I am having anxiety so bad tonight, I had to cancel my plans and am thinking of calling PDoc to call in script to start on Klonopin!

I've been searching thru some research articles..here's somethings I found in the past few minutes..

Potent serotonin reuptake inhibitors appear to have superior efficacy in many of the anxiety disorders, with indications that norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors have an advantage in severe forms of major depression. Medications with dual effects-blocking reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine (e.g., clomipramine and venlafaxine XR)-have superior benefits in achieving remission in major depression and GAD.

Alternative anxiety treatments (evidence based):

Conclusions: The treatments with the best evidence of effectiveness are kava (for generalised anxiety), exercise (for
generalised anxiety), relaxation training (for generalised anxiety, panic disorder, dental phobia and test anxiety) and bibliotherapy (for specific phobias). There is more limited evidence to support the effectiveness of acupuncture, music,
autogenic training and meditation for generalised anxiety; for inositol in the treatment of panic disorder and obsessivecompulsive disorder; and for alcohol avoidance by people with

Kava is an anticonvulsant:

Kava is one of the few herbs for which active constituents are well delineated; these are the kavapyrones, including kawain, dihydrokawain, methysticin, and dihydromethysticin (59). The kavapyrones are centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants and anticonvulsants. Their effects seem to be due to inhibition of sodium and calcium channels as well as effects on glutamate systems (69). Kava extract has been reported to affect GABAA receptors, as shown by enhanced
muscimol binding (70), but has also been reported to have no effect on GABA or benzodiazepine binding (71). Several kavapyrones, including methysticin and dihydromethysticin, are potent inhibitors of norepinephrine
uptake (72).

Overview of antidepressants effectiveness for anxiety:

http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=1372222

Tertiary tricyclic antidepressant agents (TCAs) with dual serotonergic-noradrenergic effects, such as imipramine and amitriptyline, appear consistently effective across the anxiety disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are particularly effective in panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. SSRIs are similar in efficacy to TCAs but are more tolerable and cause fewer serious adverse events. However, they are relatively slow to act, and efficacy data are limited in states such as generalized anxiety disorder. Newer antidepressants, such as mirtazapine, nefazodone, and venlafaxine XR, may provide some benefits across the broad spectrum of anxiety disorders with the safety and tolerability that are the hallmarks of third generation antidepressants

Hi Phillippa, no, just ran out of xanax is all. I don't have appt w/new PDoc for 2 1/2 more weeks. I've realized I do need to find another long-term remedy for anxiety, but have been putting off action. I'm afraid I'll end up w/another drug that makes me depressed, tired, takes away my sexuality, and causes weight gain. I cannot identify a good remedy right now besides Klonopin, which isn't that great either. If I go back on that drug merry go round w/drugs that make me depressed and tired, I'll most likely fail out of grad school and have enormous debt. Those thoughts aren't coming from anxiety though, but from past experience. My mood has been good for months now, after being on other meds off/on for 3 years that gave me depression, the thought of being depressed from drugs again as a trade off for anxiety relief scares me.

How are you coming along? Did you find a new PDoc? Continuing with the same meds?

(I have to put this here so I can come back to it..."A few species of Passiflora have been used for curing various ailments, the most important being Passiflora incarnata Linneaus which possesses significant CNS depressant properties.")

Adrenal Cortex Extract.

I think what we miss almost all the time when trying to treat anxiety is that we feel like we are trying to calm down a runaway train. While benzos and such temporarily put that train on an uphill slant that slows it down, the train is still in runaway mode.

Complicated and lengthy to explain, but we are talking about adrenal function quite messed up. Stress or illness starts it, weak adrenals makes it worse, then it is a selffullfilling things when the symptoms themselves continue to make the underlying cause even worse. To put a stop to the madness, take a load off the adrenals. Tell them to rest. That can be done with Adrenal Cortex. It might sound weird that feeding the adrenals food that makes more adrenaline would calm things down, but that is what usually happens, by way of the feedback loops kicking in.

for the kind of anxiety you seem to be experiencing from time to time . . i would say exercise or passion flower ain't gonna cut it.

Benzo is the gold standard, that and/or a good working AD.

BB-Feeding the adrenals food that makes more adrenaline. Your right I always feel like I am running on pure adrenaline when my anxiety cranks up. And yes, most of the time there is some stress that touches it off. And sometimes it can be very minimal and the anxiety is so severe it puts me into depression - and around and around I go. How do you feed the adrenals? Vits, drugs? Whatever it is can it be taken with ads? Or would it substitute for ads.
Thanks, Dave
