lamictal acute psychosis, the cause ?

Posted by Jeroen on June 14, 2009, at 15:48:22

hi, i have read that, in schizo, you have low levels of glutamate, and lamictal blocks the glutamate so as a result you get a worsening of psychosis or acute psychosis

is this true? can anyone tell me the damn truth lol

Possibly in writeups... but the case reports that I have seen in literature on the net and in journals of very short use of Lamictal that has led to psychosis all terminated with the removal of Lamictal.

I still say without prejudice that there are a number of other factors going on and that causation in this case is not causality.

(I know, I hate that term because I can definitely link up certain things -- tics and syndromes due to certain neuroleptics, but I've probably been sensitive to those my whole life until I started to need them [offlabel])

I'm thinking you meant correlation (such as things happening at around the same time, or one right after the other) is not the same as causation?
If so, I agree.

You might have schizoaffective disorder. With this disorder, mania (with or without psychosis) comes first and leads to shizoid psychosis. However, I should think that clozapine would have knocked it out. Perhaps you need to focus on combining mood stabilizers (like lithium) and antipsychotics at the same time.

jeroen, i can actually relate on many levels. Not only once have i regretted taking a substance but twice.
First I took acid when I used to have substance abuse problems. That instantly left me majorly depressed as well as majorly anxious. I never really had any super bad mental illnesses before until then. So it hit me extremely hard.
Then I continued to have problems from it and was diagnosed with HPPD. Derealization, after images, just distortions from LSD in general.
Eventually I suffered so greatly from this that I just learned to let go. There was no coping mechinism for this, it was just to let it be and accept it(accept the pain that comes with it). This example is harder to explain.
My second mistake with a substance was Luvox, i took it and I started having teeth problems. This has reaked havoc on me, considering I have OCD like qualites so everything is intensly magnified. I just recently have learned to let go of this problem. I looked deep into why I care so much and i found out why.
But anyway, maybe you have OCD like qualites that is making this harder than it should be. Once you let go, that is when you start to heal. Which is ironic because it is so painful.
this is only a suggestion
