Posted by manic666 on May 27, 2009, at 4:23:57

i ask valid questions for help , an as usual f*** all, listen i have no shrink , limited meds an no answers, i asked a serious question about why or what blocks you brain in crisis, an wrote a istance ,phillipa thought i was on the booze , no im asking when well normal if you drank a lot you would be falling down drunk , but when ill your brain blocks all that feeling out , in therory i could dtrink till uncouncios but feel no alchol normal reations , what blocks this from your brain,an the other thing when first taking sertrline 50mg floors you . 100mg zombies you . but as you hit a anxierty level , the sedation vanishes , so at this time do you need an even bigger dose to level out. or ride it out ,i must admit i have been a little hit a miss with the doses i need to level a dose , i was trying 50 mg am an 50 pm no good now im keeping to 100mg am , but is there a need to up the one dose all is not well at the moment

Hi Manic.

It is possible that no one feels they can answer your questions with confidence. You are not being ignored. At least, not by me. I am glad you reached out and followed up with this post. I'll look at your stuff and see if I can answer it. I think you might get some replies on the Neurotransmitters board.

Hi again.

> i ask valid questions for help , an as usual f*** all, listen i have no shrink , limited meds an no answers,

I'm sorry that you are in such a severely limiting condition. No one would fault you for becoming frustrated and perhaps desperate.

> why or what blocks you brain in crisis

I don't understand this question. Perhaps you can give a more detailed description.

> if you drank a lot you would be falling down drunk , but when ill your brain blocks all that feeling out

I really don't know. I guess it could be the medication you are taking. I know Parnate can exaggerate the psychotropic effects of alcohol for some people.

> in therory i could dtrink till uncouncios but feel no alchol normal reations

Has this always been the case, or just when you are taking medication?

> what blocks this from your brain,an the other thing when first taking sertrline 50mg floors you .

Anxiety is often a side effect that occurs early in treatment with an SSRI like sertraline (Zoloft), and can disappear with continued use. Personally, I don't think one is giving sertraline a fair trial unless they move up to 200mg if it is tolerable. Give 100mg two or three weeks total. If you already have, I would then try 150mg for 2-3 weeks, and then 200mg for 3 or more weeks.

I can't be sure, but it may be that your writing style is difficult to read, and that is why people do not feel that they understand your predicament well enough to comment on it. People don't usually like to see someone post without giving a reply.

Manic sorry I didn't understand if you were drinking and couldn't feel the effects of the alchohol as I always could when drinking dry now for 14 years. Have you tried 75mg of the zoloft? Phillipa

hey thats more answer,s than my sh*t p doc gave me in 2 years thanks buddy, i do tend to mess my meds , like i said i will stick to the same dose 100, mg / am an move up if need thanks , yes my writeing , i write as i speak with a sort of town slang , plus the dyslexia i dont use the spell check ,its cheating . i carnt tell or see what i write ,i check it over but the g an c an others look the same , so yes it must be hard to read .like i say im writeing the way i speak do you get me.The brain block you are on the track but if im in depression without meds it works the same.its as if the depression view,s the alchol as a intruder into the hold it has on you an so blocks it from your brain, its like a fight an the winner is depression does that make sence , thanks again

That makes sense to me... I think that dopamine is responsible for alcohol not having a response.... I've heard that people who take LSD can drink a ton without feeling drunk...Isn't that dopamine effect? Others are much better informed on the neurotransmitters than I am but I am guessing that the meds somehow block the alcohol effect. Either that or your own state (whether it be manic or depressed) could have effect on alcohol...... Just a theory......Hope it helps clear some of the confusion up.

Hey manic,

I quit drinking several years ago....when I did quit, I was taking zoloft 100mg and the desire to drink just faded with time? Zoloft has been my primary A/D for 8-9 years now and I noticed after several months, my taste for beer, and the way I felt after having one, was anything but enjoyable.
So I haven't had a wobbly pop since!

I hope things get better for you Buddy, I know you haven't been feeling good so hang in there.

Rick

Hi Manic.

I appreciate your being so open as to tell us about the challenges you have to work with.

Have you ever tried Straterra?

I know what you mean. Alcohol loses most of its effect on me when I'm depressed too. I wonder if it's because the neurotransmitters that alcohol normally boosts are so depleted.

Now I'm pretty much in remission it's 50/50 whether booze will give me a buzz or just leave me feeling queasy and depressed.

i seem to have given you the impression, that im on the beer ,well no i do drink 2 pints of stella a day at about 3 in the afternoon, but that is in a bar to keep in touch with the people i no, i used it as a instance ,of like when before meds an i had a attack of anxierty an depression you self medicated. an i new when it was bad as the alchol as you explain now, is being blocked by a more powerful force ie depression.but later as i was scripted ativan as a take when needed drug, that blocked in a different way a cool way, you didnt get fall down drunk, an felt good . thats why in todays dance set, they take ativan as a recky drug , so they can drink alnight an dance , where as before if they wanted to dance would take extacy an drink sort drinks.no i dont drink above the 2 pints , but as i say i just was used it as a way to express what used to happen pre med .i reolise now that depression is all powerful an blocks out near on everything if not medicated.PS PHILLIPA YOU KEEP BANGING ON ABOUT HOW GREAT IT WAS ON YOUR FEW MEDS AN 6 BOTTLES OF BOOZE,you had, in you own words been on a downer since you stopped ,you said the shrink told you to stop ,even if there were some medical issuses i would have told him to take a hike, if you were happy an life was cool so be it?????????

i forgot the reason,i started this, the 2 stella,s in the after noon always made me sleepy,an relaxed . so i didnt crave , say ativan, but as i got worse the effect disappeared, but we have been thought that now, an i reolise your brain is blocked to lifes good feelings

hi. I sometimes have difficulty understanding the flow of your sentences. I know, kettle, pot, ...

I agree with you about ssris, they sap energy when you want it, but don' tblock anxiety when it happens.

Hi Scott,

I'm a friend of Manic's and he often asks me for advice on meds (so I know he wouldn't mind me following up on your message to him). You mentioned Stratera for him, which is an interesting suggestion and I wanted to ask you more about it. He didn't do well on Effexor or Cymbalta. They caused him to be quite anxious so I have been assuming that he should stay away from NE drugs. Do you think there's a chance that he might be able to tolerate Stratera even if he couldn't tolerate the other SNRIs?

I wonder if he could even get that prescribed for him in the UK...

Thanks,
Clipper

That it is a NE reuptake inhibitor does not necessarily make it angiogenic. Also, there are many people who experience anxiety on any drug that inhibits 5-HT reuptake.

When I tried Strattera, I actually felt calmer on it. It felt different from desipramine. It did not help with depression, but I did feel somewhat subdued. If ADD is suspect, Strattera is definitely worth a try.

If ADD is suspect, Strattera is definitely worth a try. I think it is more selective for the prefrontal cortex than desipramine, and may be the reason it works so well for ADD and not for depression.

After a bit of Googling, I am of the impression that Strattera (atomoxetine) was licensed in the UK in 2004. I guess it should still be available.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks so much Scott!

I hope he reads this. I will definitely talk to him about it.

Take care.
