Garnet doesn't it read 2006? Although I could be mistaken or is there a new study. Know a guy in San Diego that was going to Try to get in a few years ago. Love Phillipa

Looks to me they are still recruiting participants, at least as of Nov 2008, the date of the last update. Maybe that's why (one reason, anyway) Garnet posted it :-)

That does seem like a long time, but I have no clue. I imagine with certain criteria, it must take a while to get the number of people you need...

Maybe they are doing more studies seems it was last year or year before that San Diego was recruiting. I wonder if they couldn't get enough participants to meet the criteria? Phillipa

I dug around for more info...

motor-slowing and cognitive impairment (though they seem to resolve)

http://www.find-health-articles.com/rec_pub_18477883-neuropsychological-impact-cg25-deep-brain-stimulation-treatment.htm

more detailed information:

I think they are just shooting in the dark here.

Since they don't know the safety or tolerability of this, it seems ultra risky.

Did you get the impression that it's mostly for Parkinson's Disease? Phillipa

Hi,

I don't think they are shooting in the dark. Dr Helen Mayberg who pioneered the first trial of DBS for depression had spent years checking the scans of people with depression and noted that a particular area of the brain was overactive in certain people with depression. She concluded that by stimulating another part of the brain she would reduce the activity in the overactive part. 4 out of 6 very Treatment Resistant people responded to the Deep Brain Stimulation.

I'm really hoping that the treatment holds promise for depression.

Denise

I didn't look into this very much, but just wantd to share it. Last night, my son told me he watched one of those news programs which showcased a woman with treatment resistant depression. She suffered most of her life but had a remarkable turnaround after this treatment. When I googled to find the news article, I came accross the study that appeared to be currently recruiting.

Phillipa,

There are quite a few trials going on for this treatment. If you look on clinicaltrials.gov you will see them on there.

Fingers crossed, this treatment will help a lot of treatment resistant people.

Denise
