Burning eyes + inside head temple

Posted by VIncent_QC on February 15, 2009, at 7:41:46

Hi Everyone,
I have a really weird sensation since more than 1 week now.

Everything begin with a not very funny pain inside my head, I often described it on this board, but it's like someone push my brain or play with it...the pain start in the middle of my head and go to the left head temple and to the right head temple and also in the back of my eyes... Since I fear to do seizure because I take Valium pills and I play with my daily dosage (between 15 to 30 mg/day), I always associated this strange sensation to the addiction of benzo drugs and the fact that if I miss a dose or take less of it, I will maybe have a seizure...

Anyway, with this strange sensation I have also an extreme pain in my eyes, they burns... I try 3 kinds of eyes drops...Visine for allergy, regular drops who only moist the eyes and another brand that I forgot the name...but nothing seem to help me to reduce this pain...My eyes just burn too much, that all I Can do is to take more Valium because I think it's related to my stress and anxiety level...

Someone have burning eyes or experience that king of feeling inside his head???

I had the burning eyes sensation a long time ago, back in 1996, when I was put on the Paxil at high dosage...but never experienced this sentation after...

Just to make the post more clearer, I was on the Parnate for more than 1 month, december to january...I switch after to the Manerix and return on the Nardil for a couple of days 2 weeks ago...I stop the Nardil and this two weirds sensations begins at the same time...

I also start a new drug, Clomipramine, since 3 days but only at a very low dosage of 20mg, so I know that's not a Clomipramine side-effect...

I also take some Seroquel at bedtime, 50mg...but the burning eyes and brain pain start a long time after I begin to use the Seroquel as a sleep aid...

Well, any suggestion to make to me? Is it the withdraw of the MAOI's, is it just my anxiety or is it a kind of too much high pressure inside my head??? Someone have a "brand" of eyes drops to recommand to me?

Did I have to ask my Doctor to give me a reference paper to do a test of EEG (Electro-Encephalogram) ???

Any comments will be really appreciated...Thanks!!!

Well, it is an interesting set of symptoms. I'm sorry your head hurts.

I'm leaning toward a simple explanation of sinus pain which can manifest a pain in the areas you describe and cause eye irritation.

However, it was hard to determine from your post if the symptoms were temporally related to medication. Is the pain/irritation constant? Do you have any vision changes (flashes, blind spots). Do you get nauseated?

In any case, my first visit would be either to a general practioner or opthamologist, with a call placed to your pdoc.

Seldom.

Vincent any chance you wear glasses as kind of get the eye thing when eyes are tired and haven't had RX changed for reading since lasix about four years ago attribute it to that and being tired. Also get headaches continuouse and attribute it to stress. Doubt if valium as has a very long half life and can be used for seizures. But I'm not a doctor so please do call. Phillipa

Well, its a bit of a long story of the disorder that continues to affect me -- an orphan disorder, visual and auditory, somatoform symptoms.

Burning eyes is just one of many sensations and exaggerations of normal phenomena or hypervigelence I get.

Since the optic nerve is the only part of the brain that can be clearly seen by a doctor without any major scanning procedure, an eye exam by an ophthalmologist, which looks at the optic nerve, would be a good rule-out of that sort of organic question.

An EEG might be of use, but if you're taking a fair dose of Valium it may dampen results.

I have tried those Refresh Liquigel (carboxymethylcellulose sodium) products, which are fairly thick and soothing -- they don't really do a whole lot for the situation and are somewhat overpriced but if it has to do with eye strain more than anything else, they may be of use.

But it could just be the way your body responds with side effects to certain substances. I guess the point is, rule out anything organic and then proceed to have other things checked.

-- best wishes

Jay

Hi Seldom,
Well, the pain inside my head appear since and then, so it's not constant, but when I reduce my Benzo intake, it's worse...

For the eyes, I had the same burning problem on the Paxil at high dosage...but never experienced it again after...it's new since 1 week...and more painfull each day with no change in my vision... I'm not a Doctor, but I can say it's not cause by the sinus, since I can breath very well from the noose...

That's sure, I have to see an opthamologist soon, cause i'm suppose to wear glasses but I lost them in a car crash...since I'm more often in front of my laptop screen since 1 week, the laptop crash 2 times so I had to recover everything and make it working at 100%, maybe my eyes just get irritated by the too much overtime in front of the screen...but that will not explain the strange pain inside the head and behind my eyes...

I will have to discuss about it to my Family Doctor tomorrow morning...

Thanks for your help ;-)

Have a nice day!

Vincent ;-)

Ok...well I think it's possibly related to my stress...in fact, just because I talk about it on this post yesterday and that I had some positives answers, all of this make me less anxious and I dind't had any eyes burning last night when I go out of the house...and I only take 10mg of Valium in the whole day...Strange no????

I also begin yesterday the 50mg of Clomipranine (Anafranil), I take it at bedtime because with the TCA's, you never know if you will have sedation or more energy...For a reason that I don't know, I think it's the first time a Antidepressant drug make me feel more energized... I had insomnia last night, even with 75mg of Seroquel...So, I think I will have to take it at daytime...divided the dosage in 2...25mg in the morning and 25 mg after the supper... What I can say about Clomipramine that's I get no side-effect, I know that's it's probably too soon to speak about the efficacity of the Clomipramine VS the newer SSRI's...but having no side-effect on a AD is for me something new...cause I always had the worst and rarest side-effects on each AD's I try before...

I do feel a little bit more nervous this morning, I feel like I drink 3 coffees...but that's all...nothing to make me sleepy like I was on every SSRI's I try...nothing to make me jump on the bottle of Valium pills and nothing to make me hungry like I never eat before...So I think it's probably a very positive things for me...I really hope the Clomipramine at an effective dosage and something to stabilise everything will help me...

Well ...thanks everyone for your help...I will go to see a specialist for the eyes, since I'm suppose to wear glasses...he will check my pressure in my eyes and others things like this...but I think it was an anxiety issue....

Have a nice day!

Bye!

Vincent ;-)
