Took Prozac and now have irregular pupil

Posted by Garnet71 on January 13, 2009, at 16:05:05

The very next day after I started Prozac my urine was cloudy. I have never seen this before. I took it for a week only because I became scared of the side effects. Ever since, one of my pupils is noticibly larger than the other. This was confirmed by my ophthamologist. Sincethen, I have read there are many peoplewho experienced permanent sexual dysfunction after taking it for some time.

Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Thanks

No only took it for a short time as too stimulating for me. I think I'll google what you describe. How strange. There is a book listening to Prozac been out for years. Didn't use double Quotes forgot how. Love Phillipa

Hello,

I'm sorry I'm late posting, I've been away, I had a really bad reaction to Prozac, but not the things you are describing. Am I right that you only took it for a week? Seems like you had some kind of reaction (obviously) but the difference in pupil size would worry me. Good you went to your eye Doc. Was he concerned? Referal to Neuro or anything like that?

I geuss if I were you I would wonder if you should stay away from SSRI's.

I've read some of your posts and you're much more informed about medications than I am. I'm sure you've probably worked it out by now, but would you mind posting what you think/know happened for the rest of us? And how you figured it out?

If someone like me woke up with two different pupil sizes, anxiety would be an understatement. Maybe you could mention the best course of action also.

Sorry you went through that. Musta been scary ;-(

I have trouble finding the posts to respond to with the way this page is set up.

Anyway, my opthamologist said since i had no vision changes to correspond with the pupil change, I should see a neurologist. I am still waiting for my referral to find one. I will keep you posted.

I know very little about this stuff; just from personal experience and internet searching. Thre are a lot of people who do know a lot that frequent this board.

My approach is usually just intuitive.

I'll keep you both posted. :)

Got a similar reaction to fluoxetine + others though on escitalopram this time around doesn't seem as prominent. I feel age (23 now) and perhaps familiarity with ssris are factors. In my case after seeing an optician i put it down to exaggerated underlying anisocoria present since birth, try looking at some childhood photos if you get a chance as they may help.

Thanks West, for sharing. I can tell you though that this is not the case with me. I've been wearing contacts since I was 12 years old-about 25 years. I am extremely nearsighted, have had many eye problems and have regularly seen experienced ophthamlogists since I was 7 and more recently retina specialists and a neuropthomologist. No neurological problems before, having been through numerous examinations, until Prozac. I'm sure I would have noticed it-being hyperconscious of any changes in my eyes due to potential retina detachment I face.

Thanks and I'll send an update after the neurologist.

ps please excuse spelling/grammar

Hello Garnet,

Sorry you're having to go through this. I hope you get some answers soon. Sounds like you've already had your share of eye problems.

oh and i'm sure you're already aware but drugs which advertently or inadvertently raise extracellular NA will cause pupillary dilation, fluoxetine being one. On the other hand a purer than pure ssri like escitalopram might also cause it. Lots of knowledge is bandied around about these drugs but no one knows for sure hot they work and in particular their downstream effects. Give even a severe depressives out of sync helter skelter quantic mess of a brain a drug and it will still have implications on the 'balance' of a whole host of neurotransmitter systems.

Did you try celexa (citalopram) or lexapro (escitalopram)?

No, I'm not aware of all that, in technical terms anyway.

The change in pupil was semi-permenant. I know that drugs change the size of your pupil, but this lasted after I quit the drug too. And it was only the left eye. it's still larger than the other-but not pronounced.
