Coffee good or bad in your opinion for anxiety/dep

Posted by Phillipa on December 27, 2008, at 12:53:19

Since coffee has dopamine and is stimulating do you personally find it's good or bad for anxiety/depression. This was brought to my attention by a coffee drinker. Phillipa

For me, it depends. No coffee, and I feel depressed. Small doses give me energy and often turn any anxiety I have into focused energy.

I do suffer occasionally from anxiety, but almost never from coffee (I usually drink two cups in the morning, one in the afternoon). But if I drink more than two cans of pop in a day, or more than four cups of coffee in one sitting, I do get a jittery, queasy feeling.

As a side note, my mom claims to have a completely paradoxical reaction to caffeine--she says that it invariably calms her and does not give her any kind of extra energy. And another side note: a few years ago I coaxed my friend into trying an expresso (she had only drank coffee a coupe times in her life). A half an hour later she had a panic attack (and she had never had one before in her life). She tells me now that even the aroma of brewing coffee sends her heart racing for a few moments.

That's a great article.

Caffeine acts on different people differently, although the pharmacology is the same. As is explained in the article, the main action of caffeine is to block adenosine A2a receptors. These are thought to function as calming receptors. So, to block them should allow for more stimulation, as they no longer inhibit catecholaminergic (DA+NE) activity. However, an increase in stimulation is not the same as being anxiogenic, although caffeine certainly can be for some people. It doesn't affect me that way. In the past, any effects of caffeine to enhance dopaminergic neurotransmission have been characterized as being an indirect effect. Actually, the biological activity of caffeine is not well studied nor understood, and I read one study suggesting a more direct effect on dopamine in fruit flies. I would not count on that, though.

My recommendation is for you to simply experiment with it and find out how your own system reacts to it. Some people can't sleep without it.

Caffeine has always been a good tool for me. It gives me more psychic energy and allows me to read and comprehend somewhat more effectively. Amphetamine puts me to sleep.

Like you, I find that there is a minimum effective dosage for caffeine, beyond which results in a loss of energy and concentration. For me, the sweet spot is 100mg.

I love caffine! Great experience. Drink it all day, right till I sleep. Lifts mood, wakes me up... Doesn't do anything for anxiety. Maybe a little for depression.

Hi Phillipa,
Hummm...the coffee drinker , is it me? lol ;-)

I take the time to read all the post about your question and it seem that the coffee act dirrentely on everyone.

I agree that in my case, if I drink too much coffee, I will not get anxious but a lot more tired, coffee make me feel a lot tired, especially at night time, I wonder why... I think it low my blood pressure.

I find the correct daily dosage of caffeine just for me...and I know when to stop and when I reach the acceptable limit... I also notice that "Wake-up" pills or any others form of "chemical" caffeine make me more nervous and anxious...and I can't drink at all the very populars energy drinks, if I drink one I do panic attacks(Maybe it's related to the Taurine inside it or others minerals)...even Pepsi Max make me feel a lot anxious.

So just the coffee seem to be assimiled differently by my metabolisme and not increase my anxiety level. I admit that sometimes, if I drink too much coffee, my hands or feets can be moist...but that's maybe just relative to the warm-up of my body temprature cause by the coffee...Anyway I didn't wanted to start a fight about caffeine, for me it's ok, for you maybe not...I'm just talking about my experience and you talk about yours...we are here to share experiences after all and help the others no?...So I hope I don't offense you ;-)

Take care of you and have a nice evening ;-)

There are a lot of terrible (and I guess darkly amusing) stories on Erowid of young people out of stimulants doing some rough maths and trying to substitute for an amphetamine effect by taking a packet or so of No Doze.

Some of them almost died.

I've seen various references to caffeine being panicogenic.

The only time coffee makes me panic is when I run out.

Scott you know at one time in my life worked 3-11 and drank coffee all night and still could sleep when went to bed. And there were also times I'd grind coffee beans in am and drink a whole pot and no anxiety. Maybe that reaction I had when my anxiety skyrocketed was because TSH was 22. Yeah know the higher TSH the less energy supposed to have not me. Love Phillipa

I was a massive caffiene drinker for at least 10 years.. it gave me a nice boost of energy. I've also had a problem with a very bad temper where i would be on edge and just snap and yell at the smallest things.. after giving up all caffiene 2 years back i suddenly found those problems have mostly gone away... i havn't thrown or smashed anything in ages now or snapped and yelled at anyone.

So for me the end of caffiene meant the end of docs giving me anti-psychotics to control that rage.. double bonus.

I can't take any caffeine with my complex of conditions -- it pushes my psychosis NOS into a wierd territory. If I absolutely have to take it because I can't stay awake for driving I have to be very careful how much I take.

But this is a personal situation.

Caffeine ultimately can affect sleep disorders in people who have them concurrently with anxiety and depression. If you have to have it, you shouldn't have it much before sleep.

Coffee has been linked to suicide reduction. Caffinie and caffine analogues also have antidepressant like effects in mice.

I find the judicious use of coffee has kept me afloat at times.

Hi Phillipa!
I found this...

http://www.socialfear.com/caffeine_in_SP_links.html

This is a link to some studies that I found on the socialfear website. Before, the socialfear was a great website about possible treatments for social phobia...I don't know why but in 2008, the webmaster remove a lot of essentials informations, change his opinion on SSRI's or SRNI's drugs...and also write that Nardil WAS the gold standard drug for social anxiety...and I remember that before he was saying it was the most powerfull and effective drug for social phobia now...not in the past...he also remove Manerix from the drug list...and things like that...Anyway...

Have a good day ;-)

Vincent thanks what caught my eye was the klonopin as an old poster saw a renounced anxiety expert in CA and he uses klonopin. And today that poster is doing great on it still. Love Phillipa hope your're also doing better.

The only time i had anything like panic attacks - it was with coffee. Also, I don't want to go to sleep if I've had coffee too much/late in the day.

everyone's different
