Is Yohimbe safe with an MAOI?

Posted by Mickapoo on December 21, 2008, at 12:59:17

I thought I read something about it on one of the no-no lists online, but now I can't find it. I did find an extensive list of interactions and contraindications and it wasn't listed. Does anyone remember reading anything about it?

Thanks!
Mick

The subject was mentioned briefly in an earlier thread, if I recall correctly. I got curious, and looked around a bit. I found no evidence for an interaction. The idea of a contraindication arises, IMHO, because yohimbe might have an additive hypertensive effect if you're coincidentally exposed to pressor amines, such as tyramine. On its own, I don't think it's *unsafe*, but I'd be cautious nonetheless. There's no way to predict individual sensitivities.

I looked for a while once and found no reports either postive, negative, or any kind of MAOI being used along with any of the alpha2 antagonists. If you try it be sure to report back, i'd quite like to know.

Have you ever tried a yohimbe tablet? I tell you what, they are real powerful in the adrenaline department. For a lift, I used to take about 1/8th of a tablet for an amphetamine type feeling. If too much, it can be that agitated nervous uncomfortable kind of speediness. In any case, it will stimulate a fairly potent flow of norepinephrine, and it has a risk of high blood pressure, so I think it warrants caution. If you are bound to experiment with it, seriously I would try a very miniscule amount to get a feel for it and then go from there. With Yohimbe, it is easy to accidentally go too far, and by then there is no way to turn it back.

I don't understand why you would want to take yohimbe.

Yohimbe was one of the more helpful drugs for my social anxiety. Other than the sweating it causes, i very much liked the effects.

I believe at one time it was thought that yohimbe had an MAOI component. I have taken it (up to 15 mg yohimbine) along with selegeline (10 mg/day) without any problem, but caution is definitely in order as yohimbine can have a powerful effect on the heart.

As to the question, "why take it?": I take it for sexual dysfunction due to the SNRI I am on (and probably other meds contribute). Personally, I find the stimulant effect unpleasant, but then I'm very sensitive to stimulants, and my current med combination keeps me just on the edge of hypomania anyway!

oh, i'd rate this as 'probably dangerous, value my life too much to try myself'. obviously there is a good chance of severe hypertension.
