Buproprion XL, why this reaction???

Posted by Justify on December 1, 2008, at 10:27:40

Im up to 300 mgs of buproprion XL for about two weeks. Instead of being energetic and motivated, I feel lazy. I would be just content to lay around take a nap or watch TV all day. I know motivation needs to come from within, but this is not what I expected. Im generally pretty uptight with anxiety issues and I think the hyperactive form of ADD, but I dont feel with it. Ironically, I dont feel any more anxious, except socially, but that may have come from halving my clonezapam to .75. I took adderall XR and I could do a million things just hated the rebound effect and was afraid to take a stimulant long term. Hell I wonder if buproprion is worse long term? I dont know??

Try to hang in there a bit. I took buproprion years ago and could not stand the headaches and irritability. This Fall I came to a place in my life where I was very depressed, smoking a lot, and the most overweight I'd ever been. What is generally the one AD that comes to mind with such problems? Wellbutrin.

I decided to see if I could bear the headaches and irritability in exchange. I started at 100 mgs. I wanted to sleep all day. This was NOT how I remembered feeling on buproprion years ago - quite the opposite.

I hung in there and the fatigue and lack of motivation went away (someone on here told me "motivation comes from within," also). @@ My dose was increased to 200 mgs. daily and I am still doing OK. Not great - but OK.

My smoking has decreased, I've lost 20 lbs. (with many more to go), and my mood is generally elevated, in turn motivating me somewhat.

I was really caught off guard with the lethargy you describe in the beginning and the LACK of headaches and short temper. I stuck it out and am glad I did. In fact I am going to ask for a 100 mg./day increase this evening from my Pdoc. I do feel anxious and somewhat paralyzed by that anxiety occasionally.

I also take a small dose of Topomax and need Klonopin for sleep, too.

I think a call to your Pdoc is in order though since you've been feeling this way for two weeks. Wishing you the best.

Jess's Mom wow congrats to you. Do you have Add also as wellbutrin in a week caused hypomania and was taken off it. Now I'm reponding opposite to all my meds and wonder what would happen if tried again. Although my pdocs says all my problems are anxiety. So you hung in and it worked. But to original poster agree call pdoc. Love Phillipa

Interesting I tried wellbutrin years ago and found I could not tolerate the anxiety and irritability. However I was at a high stress job and perhaps that was the wrong med for the situation.

However my situation is now different. I suffer from depression characterized by low energy. Also have adult add. Perhaps this med might benefit me now. I guess because our chemistry is always changing sometimes a med that failed might benefit us.

That sounds like mild stimulant withdrawal. Did you just quit the adderall? Bupropion is much weaker, you might just have some withdrawal from the AMP you're still going through.

I doubt it. I stopped adderral XR 15 mgs back in September. Also took Vyvanse 50 mgs for a brief period. I was on AMP and D AMP for about a year.

THX

THX for your encouragement:) Funny thing, later in the afternoon my mind clears up. I can't tell if it's the drug leaving or peaking. Today about 2:00 o'clock I felt better. It's weird my mornings are worse than my evenings :(

Thanks, Phillipa. No ADD here. Depression with anxiety. I remember you writing that buproprion gave you mania. It is definitely stimulating, especially for those of us with anxiety. I'll say this - the week before my period when my anxiety has always been it's worst, the buproprion definitely gives me anxiety and I am very weepy. Not sure if I am perimenopausal and that has something to do with it though.

But I am not having headaches or being super short tempered like I was when I first tried buproprion seven years ago. Go figure.

Oh, the mornings are the worst for me, too. Always have been. Wish I could give in to my night owl tendencies but have a child to get to school. I also feel my best, psychologically, in the evening, too. I'd say keep on keeping on but two weeks is a long time to be suffering.

I can't figure as none of my meds are acting the same anymore now always tired. Also horrible morning and nights better bed 2 am . Maybe I should try wellbutrin again. Even with messed up thyroid??? So strange. Love Phillipa and Bulldog sounds like the ticket for you. Seriously.

Wellbutrin made me very flat and lethargic. Contrary to what it does with many people, it completely killed my sex drive. Worse than SSRIs.

Just because a med has a certain reputation or a particular flavor doesn't mean it is like that with everyone. There is always about 20% of people who get a totally opposite experience.

I tried regular Wellbutrin a while ago, had one week of energy, then flat and irritable. After 4 weeks I stopped it. I hear its good to augment with another A/d, if for depression. One success story I know of was combo Wellbutrin and Cymbalta.

Hope that helps,

Phillipa - I hear you about the Bulldog. Was thrilled when it first came out. Then I tasted it. YUCK. A stiff cup of homemade Starbucks gets things going in the morning somewhat but I still need more "get up and go" and that second cup of coffee doesn't taste so good at all.

Anyone have any other ideas? I've even thought of OTC Dexatrim (diet pill) since I am trying to lose weight anyway and it's got caffeine in it.

Wellbutrin might be worth a try for you. It worked terribly for me in 2001 and is now helping seven years later. Not a miracle drug, mind you, but definitely helping without headaches, irritability, agitation, trembling.
