Endos Of Mine Are For Real Or What?????

Posted by Phillipa on November 11, 2008, at 13:11:43

Oh boy if you were here bet I could yell louder than all of you together. Just got call from endos nurse with latest thyroid results. I know this is the med board but so is synthroid a med. So new results TSH .552, Free T4 1.67, T3 90. Was told they were normal. Said thought new levels for Tsh were l-2. She Said I've been in this range for the last three testings. She said my Tiredness and Boy it's bad and anxiety but it's turning into not needing benzos isn't from thyroid. Say to her That when first got thyroid 14 years ago my anxiety was off the charts so bad till more synthroid added she said it couldn't have been thyroid. So how come the added synthroid took it away???? And she says that if you have thyroid hypo you don't have to gain weight and feel super dupper fine. So my problems couldn't possiblely be throid related. Either I'm totally wacked or have absolutely no understanding of thyroid???? If you have gone through anything at all similar to me comments. Want to get in my car and drive off a cliff so frustrated but no cliffs here. Love Phillipa not whining mad so mad could be uncivil but won't. Someone out there understands thyroid disorders and please if you do help me as seen two endos and both have me messed up if I'm messed up well right now my brain sure is. Help!!!!!!!

Well Phillipa as I understand it and I have hypothyroid right now and am being treated so I am not an expert just have a layman's understanding, your numbers as you stated are just in the normal range. The new range for TSH is .5 - 1.5 which yours being .552 is within that range. Free T4 should be in the range of .8 - 1.8 so yours is again right there and your T-3 is 90 which is the low range of normal with the range being 80-220. You could ask for a antibodies test since you still feel tired and anxious. Now extreme anxiety is also a sign of hyperthyroidism. So do you think your thyroid is too active or too sluggish is the question? And if it is hyper you lose weight not gain.

My doc told me when my levels got too low in the normal range or too low for my body, that I would feel bad again. And then it would be time to get off the meds. So maybe your meds are needing to be adjusted or off. And your thyroid would adjust and you would feel better and less anxious. Are you eating well for thyroid issues. Because diet can improve it. I know you are exercises. You really may not need it if the meds took the anxiety away and you feel better and now suddenly you feel worse.

Maybe insist they do the antibodies test to check further.

I always thought that once you were on thyroid replacement hormone you had to take it for life, unless I misread the above post?

Rsk you saved me a google search as didn't know T3 ranges thanks. I think since mine always ran high that these levels are too low for me. I do have the antibiodies making it autoimmune. He lowered the dose today to stop weight loss and let the thyroid get higher that's how it works doesn't it? Thanks Love Phillipa such a hard hormone to understand to me.

Phillipa, have you ever considered that you might have adrenal fatigue? You should get your cortisol levels checked if you haven't already. There's a lot of good info on Babble about adrenal fatigue - especially from Bleauberry. Check it out and see if it fits you.

Wish I could help with this one but don't have a clue about Thyroid other than mine is low end. Its my understanding that hypo would cause weight gain and sluggishness, hyper causes weight loss and either more energy or anxiety. Cytomel, 10mcg in morn made me irritable and anxious. No weight problem, but very sluggish (probably not from thyroid).

Good luck with that Phillipa, someone will know.

Yep that is. You got too low for your body and you felt worse. At least that is how my doc explained. She said too high you feel bad, too low you feel bad. But where exactly your body needs to be only your body can tell you. The tests are ranges but those are individual to each of us. At least maybe now you will get some relief.

Sometimes you have to be on it forever, sometimes not. Depends if your thyroid is blown completely or sluggish. Sometimes it can recover sometimes not.

My father's family all have thyroid issues. I think mine where going to happen due to genetics and trauma causing too much stress. What to do?

I took the ranges from my lab work.

No problem. Hope you feel better soon.

The best test for cortisol levels is the saliva test not the blood test.

There is a test that you can do at home to check for adrenal fatigue. I have an excellent book on it too. This doc has a website full of great information, including information about the thyroid since they do often run hand in hand. it is like the chicken and the egg, which one causes which. The thyroid being out can cause adrenal fatigue and adrenal fatigue can cause the thyroid to go on the fritz. Now stress and bad diet can cause both to go bad. Along with bad infection like the flu, etc. The book is, " Adrenal Fatigue, The 21st Century Stress Syndrome" by Dr. James L Wilson. His website is www.adrenalfatigue.org
I think he even gives you links where you can do the saliva test on your on and send it to a lab for the results.

take care phillipa.

Jan, I'm trying to be civil here but you've been told what sounds like some partially good news, because I can't parse all of what you've been saying.

And please don't drive off a cliff.

You have Hashimoto's, not hypo/hyperthroidism due to other causes, and it is a changing, unfortunately degenerating in some people, autoimmune disorder.

Use your life. I know I'm depressed as heck, but I think there is some endogenous or dysthimic depression that is lurking around plus some obsession and microanalyses of the thyroid tests and your own research into things, which I can understand given a disorder, but if I'm going to be so crass how many endocrinologists is it going to take to make you as reassured about your life as modern medicine can?

Focus on what you can do, not what is wrong -- contrary to what I am told and get frustrated and depressed of course naturally, and maybe some of the rest of feelings will follow. Focusing on the body so much is exhausting in itself. It becomes somatic.

If you want a second opinion, go ahead if you can, be my guest, but do it in the guise that you want to be sure about your health and not about TSH levels in testing.

Its a fight to stay above water, I know -- but ride the crest and climb that mountain as much as you can. Maybe you'll see some sunshine.

-- you know you're in my wishes
