Anyone on Nefazodone? Doc Just prescribed it

Posted by JudyAtown on October 3, 2008, at 10:15:24

Just wondering if anyone was on this? Not afraid of the "Liver" issues at all. A little sleepy during the day, but I believe it will go away in a little while.

Any weight gain?

Sorry, wanted to add that I was on Prozac for years, went back on, but my anxiety was debilitating.

Went on Paxil, but I gained 40 lbs. Had HORRIBLE withdrawal.

Was frightened to go back on any antidepressant, but my doc wants to try, and is not afraid to try this. It was the 1st thing she suggested! I am on 50-100mg before bed. I also take 1/2 generic xanac, because I have suffered from insomnia for a long time.

I was put on it unfortunately I was afraid of the liver enzymes since mine had gotten bad over the summer so never gave it a good trial. I think it's like an antihystamine not sure though. Keep us posted okay? Love Phillipa

Nefazodone is a strong serotonin 2A antagonist and weak serotonin reuptake inhibitor. So a little bit of what Prozac and Paxil do (inhibit serotonin reuptake) and a lot of a something different. Less likely to cause sexual dysfunction than SSRIs and none of the start up anxiety associated with SSRIs. Similar to trazodone expect trazodone also blocks histamine which makes it quite sedating.

Hope nefazodone works out well for you. You're right not to worry too much about liver problems as they are quite rare. Wikipedia says approximately one in 250,000 to 300,000 patient-years. It might be worth getting your liver enzymes checked just to be sure though.

I took Nefazodone for several years in the 90s...I thought it raised the floor somewhat, without any side effects that I can remember.

I am trying to get back on it now, though I was crazy anxious the day after my first 50 mg dose.

Keep posting and let me know how you do with it.

I was on Nefazodone for over 10 years, I thought it was the best prescription AD I have ever tried side-effect wise, basically it was the only one I could tolerate. It helped noticeably for depression and was very good for anxiety type issues.

I always noticed a bit of spaciness and sleepiness at first but after the first week or two that went away. Also, it makes you sleep very deep. It cured me of years of insomnia - which has not come back even after I quit taking it.

Good luck!

Have you found a comparable substitute for the Serzone you used to take? I loved it as well.... can't find anything like it.

Around 2004, I was unable to find Serzone anymore, ( although you can now find generic Nefazodone) - after I was forced to quit Serzone, I tried about 15 prescription AD's over the next 2 years causing an overall worsening of my depression and anxiety.

A little over a year ago I quit taking prescriptions have stuck to a supplement program and regular exercise as well as modifying my diet, and am overall doing better than I have in the last 15-20 years.

But the answer is.. no, I nevr found a medicine that I liked as much as Nefazodone. Sorry I'm no help!

> Does anyone know how long the tiredness lasts?

I was on it for years -- it seems to me the daytime drowsiness was quite slow to go -- maybe six weeks?

As others have said, it was the best AD I was ever on, both for effectiveness & low S/E. No longer available in Canada, alas.

I found for me the ideal combo was 300-400 mg nefazodone per day plus 20-30 mg buspirone (10 mg b-tid). Many people don't seem to feel a benefit from buspirone - the effects are quite subtle - for me, it prevented a stress-related reactive depression pattern that was common for me at the time, as well as having an activating and mood elevating effect.

Hang in through the initial drowsy period - I had to cut back to 50 mg at a time for the first few weeks, but it did eventually go away. Take most of your daily dose at night if possible (but not all at night, as it has a fairly short half-life).

Tony
