Trileptal - how long do initial side effects last?

Posted by bert99 on September 20, 2008, at 18:04:00

Hi there,

I started Trileptal last night, I have taken two doses so far. To be honest I feel like I have been hit by a mack truck.

I have been looking through the archives but haven't found much to answer my specific questions on this topic.

I was just wondering how long long it usually takes for these specific side effects to go away.

I feel completely stoned, inside of my head, depersonalized, everything is bright, and unable to hear anything except what I am focused on.

I slept in today until 2 p.m!!

I am also taking Zyprexa 5 mg and Topamax 400 mg.

Last year I tried Topiramate for three weeks before giving up as I felt completely out of it for most of that time.

I don't feel any particularly calming effects yet.

Will these side effects go away, or is it the same deal with Trileptal?

I am taking this for BPII with issues such as depression, rage and agitation. I'm hypomanic right now.

Thank you kindly for your suggestions/comments.

:-)

It depends. When I got onto my final dose of trileptal (1200mgs/day), it took 2 weeks before I stopped feeling moronic. However...I still *sounded* stoned until I stopped taking it. Also, I had some degree of cognitive impairment the whole time I was on it that didn't go away until I'd been off of it for a month or so.

Have you considered Keppra or Lamictal? I think they don't make people as dumb. Also, topomax is kind of known for making people stupid...zyprexa isn't exactly a smart pill, either, so your combo is kind of dumbing you down.

Good luck.

Hi there,

I'm just switching from Lamictal as it doesn't work well for me, makes my mind race uncontrollably. Thanks anyways. :) Take care.

I would be cautious with Keppra -- it can cause psychosis in some people.

Trileptal is certainly safer than Tegretol, I guess I didn't have the same experience, but I don't recall, it either messed up something in my medication combination, or I was just experiencing something as a part of my disorder, so I didnt pursue further at the time.

Lamictal is a fairly good antidepressant, it just takes a loooong time to get to a good measure, basically because you dont want not the petit rash, but THE RASH, aka SJS, Steven-Johnson Syndrome.

That's why the first initial low doses are to test if you get sebhorreic reactions and going up slower has been shown to prevent SJS more.

It was a trial -- probably 150, I don't remember. I think there was a thought that it interacted with one of my many somatoform constellations (thirst) or itself caused a side effect sensation of constant thirst. I'd rather not think about this, because I know that at least in the past, if I think about it, it will happen. Its hard to explain.

Either you have extra sensory perception or you are very resonant and lovingly perceptive, either way I appreciate the observation -- yes, I have slipped a bit down into a dysthymia, I feel like everyone who is helping me has a different take on everything including myself, and the number of constellations and range of psychosis is just... well.. I haven't really "accepted" where I am, because I never believed all this, symptoms, medication, could happen in my life.

I thought, well I conquered my major OCD in my life and yeah, I would get depressed or have some OCD from time to time but not something where there are just baffling visual and auditory experiences that wax and wane, except the latest one about seeing cars (probably has to do with my visual field experience) go too fast. I know they aren't. I'm grounded, I have reality -- but its my own reality -- I feel disconnected from everyone else.

Mainly though its everything at once, movement disorders, psychosis experiences, gaining weight that I can't fight off very well and worried about diabetes II, though my cholesterol is still fine, and really the big one, what is the final outcome of all of the care I'm receiving, I haven't excepted that it may not be the golden rainbow and everything but something has to happen more and it requires myself to do things and I don't have a "spark" at the moment in life, I tend to want to sleep away life more than experience it because I hate experiencing all these things.

I haven't accepted where I am and my limitations at this time and also not seeing what I really can do and am capable of, daily, weekly, etc.

Well that was a run-on paragraph, but yes, that's where I am, in general.

Jay just babblemailed you. Love Phillipa. yes I pick-up on things as remember I did work in psych for quite a few years. It was my job to be able to sense changes and not to brag I was good. Very good.
