Survey Of Hypo or hyper throidism and Ana level fo

Posted by Phillipa on September 17, 2008, at 0:34:55

Well let's put my theory to rest or find out that I saw right as when nursing was struck by the number of psych patients that had some form of thyroid disease. So my question is how many of you have had very complete assessment testing of all thyroid hormones tsh, t4, t3, free t4, free t3 and the autoimmune antibodies that indicate autoimmune thyroid problems as a lot are of that origin and what supplementations, medications work for you. I really saw a trend and since so many are treatment resistant this could provide a link to hormones and depression anxiety and other mental illnesses. Ana is anti neuclear antibodies which tests for all autoimmune diseases and other infectious illnessnes can have elevated Ana's and an elevated ANA can also be normal. Thanks Phillipa

I did have a "complete" thyroid assay done and my thyroid function was, at the time, low-normal, with very elevated TSH. I was working with a good holistic practitioner at the time who told me about the link between the thyroid and the adrenals and I believe it's actually the adrenals that are at the root of the problem (the thyroid is a knock-on effect).

I'd be very keen to see what you find out-- interestingly, I responded VERY, VERY well to thyroid medication (compounded, time-release T3) for just a few weeks, and then it all pooped out.

So what did you do then? Was it adrenal fatigue? When I first got hasimotos my TSH was also very high. Also lymes chronic found at about the same time. Thanks for the response. Love Phillipa

My TSH is high normal, but I've not had an ANA panel or other thyroid tests. (Despite my thyroid paranoia.)

I have this insane theory that bipolar "burn's out" the thyroid through the constant ups and downs and a less insane theory that says worsening thyroid disease can cause depression before other symptoms become noticeable.

A warning to my fellow thyroid worriers: Drastic low-calorie diets (like the thousand-calorie test-your-thyroid diet) can cause hypothyroid symptoms simply because you CAN'T create energy fast enough from fat. You will get cold.

Some docs have used thyroid meds to boost antidepressants with good results, but thyroid meds are inherently dangerous to your heart. (It reminds me of engine longevity - cool running engines last longer than hot ones.) If life were unbearable otherwise, I'd definitely try that thyroid boost, though.
