What OCD meds are safe to take with Nardil?

Posted by DavidLa on August 17, 2008, at 22:27:34

I take Nardil for Social Phobia/Depression and am looking for something I can add that will address my OCD.

What OCD meds are safe to take with Nardil?

Which of these are generally considered most effective (ie, first-line treatments)?

Thanks,
DLA

I'm not aware of any you can take with nardil. At first just anafranil and luvox were for OCD now I think all the SSRI's are approved. Phillipa

There are some things to try. Antipsychotic might be the easiest to get. Other options are inositol, memantine, or benzos.

Oh and opioids too. I'm not sure what ones you could get prescribed though; the only one i can think of offhand that is centrally acting and unscheduled is tramadol and thats a no-no with moais.

I could be mistaken, but I believe Nardil treats OCD.

The problem with combining MAOIs with re-uptake inhibitors (i.e. either SSRIs or TCAs) is that of serotonin toxicity (serotonin syndrome). This reaction can only occur with antidepressants that posses potency as SRIs. Of the TCAs, this only includes imipramine and clomipramine. The other TCAs are safe to combine with the MAOIs because they do not posses significant SRI potency.

Have any of the non-serotonergic trycyclics been shown to be helpful in OCD though?

DavidLa,

I take abilify for what some p-docs have considered a kind of OCD but others consider more like a nervous tic. I have trichotillimania, or compulsive hair pulling. The abilify totally wipes out the hair pulling compulsion. Which makes me suspect it would work well for other OCD compulsions.

How long have you been on phenelzine? OCD sometimes requires longer to be helped by a drug trial. You might not need something else.

That's a good question, Desolation. I don't think they have been actually--just anafranil, which supposedly the best balanced serotenergic/norepinephrine AD. However, I think the NE and other effects of certain tricylcics could boost the effectivness of an MAOI. This may have something to do with down regulation of certain 5ht receptor, which is characteristic of nortriptyline when combined with SSRIs.

"Have any of the non-serotonergic trycyclics been shown to be helpful in OCD though?"

No, only Clomipramine

If Phenelzine isnt working, maybe the dose neds to be pushed upto 90mg per day, or perhaps a different drug needs to be tried, as options to take with Phenelzine are limited.

What dosage was effective for you? Any side effects?

Nardil actually increases my OCD-like symptoms, so increasing the dose is not an option. Not to mention the side effects at higher dosages get much worse.
