*SSRI + Tianeptine = Possible Serotonin Syndrome ?

Posted by Marty on July 20, 2008, at 0:48:25

There's a guy on the web saying he had a couple weeks of depersonalisation after a serotoniin syndrome induced by taking 5mg of 5-HTP (supplement) with Tianeptine (which I assume is the fit-all 12.5mg TID) ............

As I seriously think my next move (not feeling well.. waiting to see if Wellbutrin restart will reboot Tianeptine initial effect) I'm looking forward to try Tianeptine with a serotonergic agent but I'm afraid of the reaction I could have.

Any thoughts about this would be appreciated. What would you suggest ?

I took it with Lexapro and it wasn't very nice. That might have just been the Lexaro though.

Intersting... could you describe how it was like ? .. What was the difference between your response (or non response) on Lexapro+Tianeptine and the other SSRI trial you did in the past ? Also did you feel Tianeptine somehow was reducing the usual SSRI side effects ? last question: What's your diagnostic/symptoms ?

I know I ask you alot of question and maybe you don't have the time or the motivation to answer me those, but not many people can answer those and if I add an SSRI to Tianeptine it will be Lexapro as I already have some. So your answers has value for me.

Thanks,

>Intersting... could you describe how it was like ?

I felt cold and shivery. I don't know if that had anything to do with some sort of serotonin problem, but I felt pretty much like that on Lexapro (amd other SSRIs) alone.

>What was the difference between your response (or non response) on Lexapro+Tianeptine and the other SSRI trial you did in the past ?

I only took it for one day. I felt so awful I just dropped the Lexapro and went back to tianeptine.

>Also did you feel Tianeptine somehow was reducing the usual SSRI side effects ?

Not really, I still had all the classic SSRI side effects. I don't think it would be that effective because it's not a serotonin blocker like cyproheptadine or something like that.

>last question: What's your diagnostic/symptoms ?

Bipolar I with psychotic features, social anxiety and agoraphobia.

No problem! There are some posts in the archives of what I reported at the time if that would be useful to you.

What about MAOIs - anyone know if it's safe to use serotonin transporter agonists like tianeptine with them?

-Crotale

Hi Crotale. Unlikely to be recommended; In fact it's specified that you should not mix both. That said, just for your information there's no such thing as 'Transporter Agonist'. In the case of Tianeptine you can say Serotonin Transporter Reuptake ENHANCER or less commonly used term ACCELERATOR.
