rivotril or klonopin

Posted by paulb on July 11, 2008, at 14:12:55

Hi
i would like to understand why rivotril and klonopin, different brand versions of clonazepam have garnered separate reputations for their usefulness in treating different things. it seems a silly question but in the uk Rivotril is used as an anticonvulsant and i dont know anyone on it for social phobia but Klonopin is used primarily for SP as a first line choice in the US and people rave about it. Is there any difference between the two and does anyone using Rivotril for SP can say that it is effective for SP as klonopin.

We call it Rivotril in Canada, but it's main usage is for anxiety. I don't think it has anything to do with the name.

It's called rivotril in Australia too and it was initially prescribed as an anticonvulsant too for seizures, spasms, restless leg syndrome and epilepsy, etc..........

Now clonazepam can now be prescribed off label for SP, panic and anxiety. It is still very hard to obtain it for these disorders though. Doctors here prefer Valium or Serapax, like Europe does. I have know idea why. Maybe it's because it such a powerful benzo. I don't know.

It's strange how countries differ in their prescribing habits

Mogadon (nitrazepam) is a sleeping pill in most countries, but in others it's only used as an anticonvulsant for epileptics and it's not even available in the US at all.

Another weird example is codeine. We can purchase Panadeine Extra OTC, 15mg codeine/500mg Paracetamol where as it's unheard of in the US. Same with Nurofen Plus 12.8mg codeine/200mg ibuprofen OTC, no forms, just a quick chat with the pharmacist and off you go.

Definitely not in The USA. I took klonopin and found it depressing for me. Actually caused suicidal ideation when none was present called the pdoc and he said get off it and back on xanax. Boy People's chemistry is definitely different. Phillipa
