Can ADs make you depressive?

Posted by hansi555 on July 1, 2008, at 13:16:35

I am all confused here.

Added 12,5 mg of Lexapro to my 52,5 mg Remeron some 5 weeks ago. After feeling better within the first few days after starting the Lexapro, last week became troublesome with loads of SE such as tiredness, anxiety and nausea, I had gone up to 15 mg a few days before. After consulting my doc I went back to 10 mg and the SE eased off. But both this sunday and today I went down with crying spells and felt totally back to square one.

Now is this normal? Could even such small changes in dosage mean such changes in mood?

Or could ADs actually make you more depressed? After starting up w. Remeron way back I also had crying spells w. no apparent reason at all after 15 days of treatment, started the Remeron treatment to be able to eat & sleep - not really for the AD effect.

I usually get 3-4 weeks of stable/good mood then followed by a 3 week period of not-so-good and then again another good period, then a not-so-good etc.

whatdoyouthink?

It could be the drugs or it could be anything. Of course drugs can cause you to be more depressed but so can a shopping list of other things.

No, dont think so, it seems very unipolar to me.

It is a stress-released depression. I dont get manic in the good periods, just plain normal...

Can ADs make you more depressed? Yes. Can small dose changes, either up or down, make you more depressed? Yes. Mileage varies, we are all biologically unique, and there are other condounding factors besides just the brain. If something makes you feel worse, don't take it.

Anti-depressants, anxiety drugs, anti-psychotics all of these can very easily have the paradoxical effect of doing the opposite of what they're supposed to do. Especially anti-depressants, though.
