risperdal and weird smells

Posted by wishingstar on June 17, 2008, at 18:15:28

I asked this question as part of a longer post about a week ago but didnt receive a response to this piece, so I'm trying again... in a more concise way.

Has anyone ever heard of/experienced risperdal causing someone to experience weird smells that no one else can smell? I've been smelling chlorine very frequently since starting it. Called pdoc on Fri but no response from her yet. Does this make any sense to anyone?

Yes, I have experienced strange smells with risperdal. I was taking it about a year ago and would smell random things. Some of the things I smelt I could not even begin to describe. I don't understand what can cause it do you?

GoodLuck : )

Google the med and see if distorted smells is a rare side effect. Since I lost my taste and smell over four years ago have noticed many meds effect taste and smell. Phillipa

I noticed an odd smell when taking Risperdal, but I had also noticed it just before taking it, which I attributed to my psychotic break. It smelled like a cross between coffee grounds and sweaty socks. It went away after about a month on the medication.

Interesting. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Phillipa, I have googled it many times but havent seen anything. My pdocs office is terrible about passing on messages so today I got fed up and using some professional connections (I work in mental health), tracked down pdocs direct voicemail line and left a message there. She called back and told me to stop taking the risperdal. She's going to consult with another pdoc and get back to me tomorrow about what we can try next since we're running out of options and have had no success at all yet. Thanks everyone.

It makes sense to me. I had the smell of burning candle wax after I did ECT. I was also taking seroquel to help me sleep at night. I wonder if it was the seroquel. So, no it does not sound strange to me. It usually means something organic and not psychological like auditory hallucinations. I thought I would go nuts with the olfactory hallucinations as I referred to them as. It could also be seizures, however, as my neurologist thought this. So, far they are gone now after I started taking Neurontin again and then off of Neurontin and no bad smells. MRI showed nothing remarkable as the other possibility they thought was a tumor. I am wondering now if it was the meds. I hope you and your doctor check it out. It can make you feel like you want to scream.

I've been on this drug before. It caused horrible weight gain....but no smells.

What type of symptoms were you using the risperdal for ? If it is a side-effect, it would be a rare one.
