Autoimmune Thyroid is stronger or Weaker Autoimmun

Posted by Phillipa on May 3, 2008, at 13:40:25

Was always told that hasimotos was a stronger autoimmune disease that would destroy foreign invaders ie: cancer so less likely to get. Now I see on google that it is weaker autoimmune sytem and schizophrenia is suspected of being one. So which is write stronger or weaker and what's this about schizophrenia? Phillipa

Well i've never heard of "weaker" or "stronger" autoimmune............ but I have heard of a study done in 2005 that showed women with Hashimotos have a decreased chance of getting breast cancer than the average population. (which I hope they are correct-- have a sister that had breast cancer, hoping I don't ever get it)

I've read and been told that some people diagnosed with schizophrenia actually have been found to have thyroid disease and so after going on thyroid medication their schizophrenic symptoms subside. So-- they really didn't have schizophrenia-- it was just a very over active or under active thyroid and they fully recovered after taking thyroid meds.

I do believe though, that some with thyroid disease can still exhibit some symptoms that parallel schizophrenia...... it's up to the patient and the doctor to communicate and work on getting thyroid levels balanced -- which, IMO can very from person to person.

you probably already know this-- but-- be careful what you believe from the internet-- there can be all kinds of junk on there.

hoping you are doing OK

Thanks I know. I think it was a wiki article. Any good sites you know of? Love Phillipa and how's the lexapro and lamictal going?

I read many different sites but I believe the well known-reputible(sp?) ones-- like the Mayo Clinic -- as sites that are most accurate. Anyone can write something on the net and claim to be a doctor..... we must be careful what we choose to believe.

It's kind of you to ask about the lexapro-..... I'm not, however, on lamictal-- believe you are thinking of fayeroe......... anyway-- I'm not a happy camper at the moment..... just taking half a pill, I'm so sleepy and have no energy... don't care for this.... but we'll see.... only been on it for 4 days...... I'll give it a bit more time- thanks again for asking.

Fleeting flutterfly sorry about the lamictal. Lexapro at five mg is making you tired? Well then I'd stick with it at this dose for a while. Love Phillipa

hate to burst your bubble, but I have Hashimoto's and have also had breast cancer, no risk factors and none in the family. Go figure. Maybe at least it means my daughters will be in the clear.

Thank you Phillipa. It's been 15 years, I am fine. Would be interesting to find a link, though, and I thought no one should rest on results of studies, they are always so skewed.

Well that's great bit wouldn't you think that if your immune system senses your own body is foreign and does damage to it it would be especially atuned to a foreign invader such as Cancer? Have you developed any other autoimmune diseases the list is so long. Love Phillipa

You are absolutely right about the immune system and how it doesn't seem to be doing what some say it does, at least in all cases. No, I do not have any other autoimmune things, but my sister does and my mother did and on and on through the generations. I am just the first and only for cancer so I am not so sure how I feel about this particular theory. After all, a theory is just that.
