hola!

its me.....just had to change my screenname for emplyoment reasons and security reasons.

I promise if post i will, well i will ****try the best***** to get back with that poster, that posted to me specifcally. As i did in the past.

Still dealing with alot of anxiety, but today was something else, i was in bad mood mainly the most of the day. I have anxiety in afternoons alot.

Lets all stay strong..........and i have ONE question, can you take Melatonin (i've read you cant take any thing with serotonin with Prozac) Man Prozac is really picky about its chemicals that you mix it with.

Thanks

LiveandThink about world hunger.

As far as i know it has no serotogenic properties and even if it did i wouldnt worry. Perhaps you're thinking of saint john's wort. I've taken melatonin with every sort of SSRI/SNRI/mood stabilizer/amphetamine/benzo i've ever been given without any sort of contradiction. Infact i cant even name a drug that interacts with it considering our brain readily produces it.

Fluoxetine + Melatonin Interaction

LiveandThink - There "may" be an interaction between melatonin and Prozac (fluoxetine). Some evidence comes from animal studies, but how these relate to humans is still unresolved (as far as I know; I been out of the loop for a couple years. In animal studies, melatonin does decrease levels of fluoxetine, but the significance of this is in question.

A molecule related to fluoxetine, fluvoxamine (Luvox) naturally increases blood levels of melatonin. When fluvoxamine and melatonin are taken at the same time, blood levels of melatonin are significantly higher than if the melatonin were taken by itself. The result of this interaction is an increase in melatonin side effects (eg. headache, nausea, and increased drowsiness). Whether this results in any real danger (in most cases) is doubtful, although the literature does not recommend taking melatonin and fluvoxamine together.

The drug interaction between fluvoxamine and melatonin is probably due to fluvoxamine's inhibition of the cytochrome P450 system (CYP); specifically CYP1A2 and CYP2C9 isoenzymes.

Since fluoxetine (Proac) is an even more potent inhibitor of the CYP2C9 isoenzyme (and also inhibits CYP1A2), and since melatonin is, at least partially, metabolized by CYP2C9, it might be prudent to use melatonin with caution (if at all) with fluoxetine (in my opinion).

I do remember a paper a couple of years back where the author(s) suggested using fluoxetine and melatonin together for the management of neuropathic pain. I have not heard if anyone has done a study of this therapy, and, from my experiences with neuropathic pain, I doubt that this is a very efficacious combination.

I hope that this is of some help. - Cam

Well that's interesting as luvox also increases effects of benzos and other meds too didn't know about the melatonin. Live and let live haven't forgotten you. Phillipa

Im sure those animal studies were using much much more than the usual human oral dose of 3mg - 6mg. Generally with any animal study they use huge doses of a substance to cover the entire range of side effects.

The studies really arent relevant unless someone plans on taking hundreds of MG.

Always wonderful to see your name! (nm) » CamW

**************thanks i've been having trouble getting to sleep at night on prozac even on Restoril, but mainly i think i've taken Restoril many years, well 2 but it may have developed a tolerance.

One thing i noticed about your post, is that your knowlage about Prozac and Melatonin thanks for the infomation about it!

I think, well obviously at this point im not going to take Melatonin with Prozac, because i once had a bad reaction with taking 5-HTP with Prozac, oh! my! god! my head was full of spinnin' i didint know what to do.

Thank you for the info.

Havent forgot about you either.....still here in 2008! wow it has been 4 years!

Lucky, but i cant take any kinda of antidepressant that is sedating, i have tried Zoloft, didnt work, it made me "agitated" in itself because it made me just feel "sedated", but not anti-anxiety sedated, like -- zombie sedated.

Still, im still to weary of taking it. Not taking it. I just though it would help, i had horrible expereince with takin (serotonin 5-HTP) with Prozac which had a HORRIBLE affect.

Twitching, racing thoughts, irrtible...

god thank goodness i asked here! or i would of been up sweating again, because melatonin is part of serotonin.

You cant diagnose serotonin syndrome over the internet.

Just start with small doses of melatonin if your worried about interactions. Melatonin doses have to be carefully adjusted in any case, in order to avoid oversleeping and daytime drowsiness.

Melatonin is very much unlike 5-HTP, which is rapidly decarboxylated into serotonin (5-HT). 5-HTP is the most direct (and hence rapid) precursor of serotonin - melatonin is not.

Ok thanks!

I dont know, i just know that flipped out when i took 5-htp with Prozac about a year ago. L-tyrosine for some reason works, im more alert, sometimes a bit irrtible, but for what it does, l-tyrosine is a good supplement for focus.
