I am scared, might have kidney/bladder trouble

Posted by Abby Cunningham on March 6, 2008, at 17:41:05

Hi everyone,
I took two courses of antibiotics (Macrobid, Cipro just finished yesterday) for a UTI and went back to the doc. today and still have white blood cells and a few red ones in sample so he is culturing it again.

I am scared because he mentioned interstitial cystitis but the 1st culture had e-coli bacteria? So now I can't bear to read up on IC as it is a horrible disease. I am very scared and my psychologist terminated me yesterday; feel like a nervous breakdown coming on.

I already take 2mg xanax when I panic. Should I take more? I have extra because my pdoc prescribes 2mg./day and I take 1.75.

Abby,

I might not be the best one to answer this because when I am scared I take more of my medicine. I take more than prescribed as a matter of fact. Not to get high, just because I am terrified and only more meds can get it under control. But yes, I would take some extra Xanax until you calm down.

Yes, interstitial cystitis is a terrible disease but you don't know that you have it yet. It is still just a vague possibility. Try not to get too freaked out about it if you can help it.

I have a tendency to catastophize and it sounds like maybe you have the same problem. I can give you this advice but at the same time I have trouble following it myself. All the same, it's good advice. Try waiting for a definite diagnosis before doing any reading about it. You will only scare yourself more.

Abby, this is one case where looking up interstitial cystitis might have offered you some peace of mind. Your earlier positive culture, and the continued presence of blood cells in your urine, strongly point to bacterial infection. Interstitial cystitis is not caused by bacteria. I'm sorry you're going through this, but your doctor may have to do some further lab tests to find out which antibiotic the bacteria are sensitive to. The widespread use of antibiotics in farming has produced some very resistant strains of e. coli, for example.

This may seem "out there", but medical science has confirmed the usefulness of cranberry juice in the treatment of UTIs. There is an unusual sugar-based molecule in cranberry juice which prevents adherence of bacteria on the epithelium surface, reducing their ability to replicate. Read labels, though. Some cranberry juices are less than 100% cranberry juice.

Good luck.

Thanks Larry. After the first course of antibiotic, which was not effective, he did a culture and sensitivity test, which showed the bacteria was sensitive to Cipro, which I took for 7 days.

I am trying to tell myself that it was just one day after completing the antibiotic that the WBC, RBC showed up, that maybe it was just still clearing. Who knows how accurate those in-office tests are anyway. This repeat culture will hopefully tell us more.

I have read some of the forums on IC and people have different stories of how they got it. Some say it all began with a real UTI.....so I best stay away from them right now!

I appreciate your reassurance Marsha. I am stopping reading the forums for now. Waiting for the next culture report to come in and trying to get my mind on other things. I hate being such a hypochondriac!

You could have a secondary infection, one taking advantage of the minor injury arising from the first.

Also a possibility.

> Who knows how accurate those in-office tests are anyway. This repeat culture will hopefully tell us more.

They're good at what they're intended to do, but they'll miss other possibilities. A negative culture doesn't mean there wasn't an infection. It means one wasn't identified. A repeat culture is a good idea, at this point.

UTIs are relatively common. IC is uncommon. It is always going to be true that a common event is likely to precede an uncommon one. That doens't mean there's a link between them. I'm absolutely certain that some cases of IC were preceded by a UTI. Recent investigations have shown no connection between infection and IC, suggesting that this is a coincidental correlation. That also doesn't mean there isn't such a connection, but it limits the possibility to something like an auto-immune response.... still not shown to be the case.

Please don't rush to conclusions. The treatment process is still very much in process.

Best,
Lar

Abby the search I did says the same as Lar now I'd not ever profess to know what he knows and that's real and good but the search said the same thing. Once also had a patient with it and she went into detox from all the pain meds she was on for it. Can't remember but Greg was there and she fessed up in group that she didn't want to give up pain meds. I do know I read her labs and no urinary infection. Lining of the wall of bladder has ulcers kind of I think in IC. But don't quote me on the last. Love Phillipa
