Does Abilify Work?

Posted by Snap on March 3, 2008, at 22:06:25

I have been taking Abilify for the past two months. I get an icky feeling that I can't shake. Kind of like I'm jumping out of my skin. I actually feel more depressed. Not sure if it's the medication or just me - however it started after about 5mg dosage.

had anyone had similar effects?

Thanks!

I have no personal experience with it but seems anxiety can happen. A google is what I'd do. Good luck Phillipa pa and a call to your doc

It sounds common with abilify. Especially if it just started after the dose increase or became significantly worse after increasing the dose, that clue is kind of hard to argue with.

Give it a name. Akathisia. Anxiety. Worsened depression. Whatever. Who cares. If a drug, herb, or supplement makes you feel worse, stop taking it. Do not however just stop taking it. Think about it. Talk to the doc about it. If the decision is made, wean off it slowly in small steps.

If it had been a few days or even a couple weeks, I might say stick with it a couple more weeks and see what happens. But it has been a couple months already. At the very least you might want to drop the dose back down to where it was. Abilify doesn't seem to be doing you any favors. At the price you are paying for it, it doesn't seem to be a good payback in terms of quality of life enhancement. I mean, if you are jumping out of your skin and depression feels a little worse, that is deterioration not enhancement.

Yes, I had similar effects. Abilify made me sick as a dog, plain and simple. It didn't help one bit. I started at 5mg too.

Seems the people who do well on the higher doses need some kind of stimulant. Anyone see that trend? Phillipa

Also ever notice that for some anxiety leads to feeling depressed. Wonder if the body gets overwhelmed so to speak and then says wait a minute I need rest? Love Phillipa

I'm tapering off. I'm on Lamictal as well so I have the Bi-polar meds covered.

Thanks for your input.

Yes. The fealing never went away, just got worse. After about 6 months or so, I quit, and started getting better.

Abilify created awful akathisia for me but it was the only medication I had taken in several years which dealt with my Bipolar II so I continued but added antianxiety meds and then stiimulants to the cocktail to deal with the jitteriness and lack of focus. I take 2.5mg because anything higher than that makes me nutty and it has been about 4 years now and the akathisia just sort of faded away and all has been stable for quite some time. I know there are those who say higher doses are wonderful, but for me just getting to them was hellacious, I am extremely dose sensitive.
