xanax unbelievable affect

Posted by jgmw on February 29, 2008, at 11:18:30

My sisters doctor could not offer an explanation for why Xanax made the psychosis go away in 3 days. He couldn't offer an answer. He was dumbfounded himself. The dosage was just .25mg ONCE A DAY! I'm wondering if she doesn't have an anxiety disorder, or something. I don't know, maybe she is misdiagnosed. I need to do some research to figure out what's going on with the situation, because it's strange.

Doesn't sound strange to me. I think it is very easy to make confusions between types of anxiety and psychosis and types of mania. There is a lot of overlap. The titles we give them are mere human attempts to neatly categorize things. The titles in no way predict what will work or not.

I had a delusional/psychotic/dysphoric mania type situation for about a month. It was crazy. It just kept going day after day. My doctor was getting frustrated that things that should work were making it worse. You know what shut it down and brought total peace in one day? A lousy skimpy 12.5mg dose of zoloft. Go figure. One day.

Anyway, I believe in going with whatever works and don't get too hung up in diagnostic lingo. Even with the best diagnostic lingo, the human error factor is always there. Ten doctors would likely have 5 or 6 different takes on what the diagnosis is. She should be very glad she's on Xanax low dose and not some high dose exoctic combo or expensive risky antipsychotic. As drugs go, xanax is probably one of the best studied, most widely prescribed worldwide, cheapest, and longest used drugs in history. It has its drawbacks of dependence. But not often admitted by doctors is the dependence on just about any other drug. For me, withdrawing from an antipsychotic was 100 times worse than withdrawing from xanax.

As for the small dose, hey, if it is a chemical imbalance, who is to say how large or small that chemical imbalance is? Who is to say that a small chemical imbalance cannot result in huge symptoms?

Dont look a gift horse in the mouth. I have been saying for years that Xanax is a wonder drug :-)

I am glad to see that it has helped someone else, no matter in what biological way it did.

The results are what really count, not trying to figure out the manner of action is, in the end.

I agree its a piddly dose but please read my previous comment. Your doctor should also know of the contraindication of any substantial amount of benzodiazepines.

It is one reason I am reducing my benzodiazepine load because I -possibly- want to switch from Seroquel to Clozaril for an off label reason.

But there are risks beyond the blood testing for me, neurological outcomes because Clozaril is very close to Zyprexa and I have a possible TDy (dystonic, dystonia) reaction that is still around. That of course is very rare unfortunately :/

Anyhow, I am glad that she is on a stable dose of Clozaril, which is pretty safe on its own and can be helpful and basically zero for TD and ironically helpful for TDy too.

Clozaril seems to be in a class of its own. Zeprexa did nothing for my sister. Made her gain a huge amount of weight. Gave her slight TD of the mouth. That's the drug she was on when a voice told her to shave her head. And, guess what? She did. Not a very good job either! I understand Clozaril has major contradictions with benzos. We checked that out first before she was given it. She takes 200mg Clozaril at night only, which is low, considering the theraputic range is 350-450mg in divided doses.

Definately is in a class of its own and a "gold" standard for some disorders. As wikipedia notes though "Olanzapine is structurally similar to clozapine, and is classified as a thienobenzodiazepine". Clozapine does not have the Chlorine and Sulfur atoms. Trivia.
