Even the article mentions it may not have any advantages over the shall we say olders forms of effexor but the way it is broken down in the body. So what does this mean? Phillipa

A patent extension basically. It would be nice if some companies could more fastrack their novel agents, but it is so hard to get new psychiatric compounds on the market. Other types of agents for other illnesses are being developed much quicker. In a way as my doctor said, we are in the middle ages of psychiatry -- not to be depressing, but we don't know how everything works.

A few things aren't completely patent extensions, like Lexapro is cleaner, and Wellbutrin SR/XL can help with seizure thresholds much better.

Only time will say whether this one also helps some people with metabolizing.
