Nozinan question please and thanks

Posted by Justherself54 on March 1, 2008, at 13:10:16

Anybody taken nozinan for Nardil induced insomnia. Pdoc wants me off seroquel at bed cause I'm pigging out on sweets and my weight has gotten to the point where there is risk of developing medical problems..

I'm always scared of taking a new med..so anybody who has knowledge of it and could share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Justy

I did research it..I will be taking 5 mg at night..I'm also wondering if I will have any problems with stopping the seroquel completely and replacing it with the nozinan..I'm only taking 50 mg of seroquel at bed but I'm nervous about stopping it ..don't want any weird stuff happening.

Justy thought you would have but didn't want to post any of the research here as some was kind of scarey to me and if I'd been you reading it for the first time would have definitely been upset. Glad you had reasearcged first. Phillipa

I take it all the time for insomnia. And I feel your pain with the seroquel ... it makes me crave carbs.

Nozinan is in the same family as Thorazine. You need to take about 30 minutes before you go to sleep. I started on 15 mg and now I take 50 mg.
You can start as low as 5 mg.It will make your mouth really dry.

If you have any specific questions, just ask!

We use Nozinan (generic - methotrimeprazine) a fair bit at the institution I work at. (Dont let that scare you off..heh.) It has one of the best reputations of the older antipsychotics because it appears to cause less chances of TD and extrapyramidal effects. Plus it is great for sleep and sedating. We prefer it over many new AP's because a) most don't work as fast and as well and b) doesn't seem to have the blood-glucose problem as with the newer AP's. A lot of our clients are at-risk or overweight from both being sedentary from years/lifetime in institutions, and having large amounts of psychotropic drugs prescribed for most of their lives. (Mostly older onesfrom Valporate to Thorazine, Largactil (chlorpromazine) etc

Pdoc says to just stop the seroquel at night when I start the Nozinan. Will I feel any withdrawals from stopping seroquel at 50 mg a night? I'm still looking at my nozinan script..I'm always anxious when I start a new night med..cluck cluck cluck, I'm chicken..

Pdoc still wants me to continue to take 11 mg of zopiclone too..will I be zonked out in the morning? I'm used to dry mouth with Nardil, but I sure hope I can get a grip and stop this binging on sweets..

Thanks you guys for answering. Makes me feel better to know someone else has taken it with good results and that it's safe (well, as safe as any of the meds we take :).

Hi Justherself,

I took Nozinan while hospitalized. I found it more potent than Seroquel, but I don't know what dose I was on. It was a single pill though. It left me a little hungover the next morning which Seroquel doesn't.

Maxime is right, the #1 side effect was a very dry mouth. I'm not sure of any long terside effects because I wasn't on it long enough.

Hope this helps a little!

I think I'm going to try to stop the seroquel first and see if just the zopiclone will work..who knows..maybe the nardil induced insomnia has lessened a bit..

I'm not sure if I should just completely stop the seroquel or just reduce it over a few days..any thoughts?

Well, I'm finished with the seroquel and took my first 10 mg tablet of nozinan..when I went to bed I could feel my pulse racing..didn't fall sound asleep until about 3 am and then slept well until 8 am

It really bothered me to feel my pulse racing like that..could that be a side effect of the nozinan?

You probably want to try and halve your dose for now. Sometimes too large an 'average' dose (even if it doesn't seem like much according to the books..you just have to adjust the drug dose personally) can cause mild EPS-like reactions. Plus, you may still have some Seroquel in your system.

Best Wishes,
Jay

Thanks Jay..I took one last night and didn't feel the racing pulse..for some reason I don't fall asleep quickly on it, but when I do, I feel like I'm in a far deeper sleep than when I was taking seroquel..maybe I should try just the zopiclone..perhaps some of the Nardil insomnia is going away..I had my first afternoon nap since September..hard to figure some of this stuff out when you're taking a cocktail of meds..

> Hi There
Cant really get the hang of doing this blog thing, wish I could. Are you saying the seroquel is giving you a racing pulse if so I really know what you mean. I am also getting very hot and flushed . Don,t know if it is the seroquel or the lamotrigine as my dose of that has recently been increased. These strange feelings really scare the hell out of me so would appreciate if anyone else has had this. It is also much worse in the a.m. wonder if its because I take largest dose of seroquel at night, anyone there with advice please !!!
Thanks
Squelch
