Med poop out-try again?

Posted by B2chica on February 15, 2008, at 8:30:29

if you've had a med poop out and not really work can you try it again? will it work again or have you built some type of tolerance to it?

wellbutrinXL always worked so well for me, and i'm really missing it. it seems like nothing else might work as well as that did.
can you try meds again after they stop working...and if so how long in between should you wait to try again?

Actually, one of the {ahem} solutions recommended for the SSRI poop out is to rotate through several of them -- take SSRI A until it poops out, switch to SSRI B until that poops out, then to SSRI C until it poops out in turn, at which point you restart SSRI A, which should be more effective for you again.

I know a lot of people disagree with that, but it's a cycle that works for many people, and it's probably worth trying. But it's a cycle that's really about SSRIs.

Wellbutrin isn't actually known for pooping out. I wonder if something else might have been going on, and if maybe restarting it with some sort of augmenting agent might be effective for you?

At any rate, my answer is, "Yes, you can try again after a medication has pooped out. They're often effective again after a break."

I think it's kinda like wormers for livestock -- if you keep using the same one, the parasites get resistant, so you have to rotate. Same sort of thing with the SRIs -- SSRI or SNRI.

Good luck.

Same with antibiotics too. Hence so many treatment resistant strains. But doesn't a person have to try another class of antidepressants if they poop out? I've yet to have one work guess I'm not in that percentage where an SSRI or SNRI works. Oh well back to the bike I hope no more rain. Love Phillipa how long have you been off the Wellbutrin?

LOL like the comparison...
anyway, i think/know something else was compounding it.
i was off wellbutrin over a year during pregnancy and nursing for 9mo. when i stopped nursing my depression hit so hard so fast i ended up having to go into the hospital cuz the wellbutrin wasn't working or working fast enough.
so i think 1.just my hormones playing havoc and 2.my depression coming back hit harder than normal wave. and 3.wellbutrin was taking WAY too long to work and pdoc had me titrating up so slowly to needed amount.

but i'm more stable now than at first and well i guess i'd really like to try it again. but i don't want to try it too soon and not have it work for me. i guess i liked it cuz i never felt tired on it like i do now. i just want to get rid of this tired feeling and want to feel a little better. and also not have this breakthrough depression. i mean i know when it hits it will only last a few days but when it comes around it s*cks.

so maybe i'll talk with him and maybe mention cymbalta or trying wellbutrin again...

My answer would be Yes. I believe (as do many) that med poop out is because your body/brain has developed tolerance to a certain drug. After a period of abstinance from the drug ( i don't think anyone really knows how long, it's pretty much an educated guess) lets say 2 years, sometimes you can re-introduce the drug to your body/brain and you will get the desired affect again. Of course this varies from individual to individual depending on the length of time between the drug "poop out" and reintroduction, and other variables. I have personally experienced good success in re-using ssri's after poop out ( prozac, zoloft and paxil). Good Luck..give it another try.

Do all people taking SSRIs experience 'poop out'??

Does anyone know about this..? If you take an SSRI for a long period of time (years), will the drug automatically 'poop out' on you after a period of time??

Does the Drug really 'poop out'? Or does a person develop tolerance to the Drug? I believe the later is what really happens.

Some people do fine long term on ssri's. I have a sister who has been on zoloft for over 10 years.

genetically we are very similar in many ways

but meds melt down on me
