Nardil 5.5 weeks side effect: thirst + anorgasmia

Posted by squatlover on February 12, 2008, at 5:49:39

So, almost at the 20 day mark of 60mg. I have had 5.5 weeks of nardil so far. negative side effects: extreme daytime somlescence, loss of balance, occasional nausea and giddiness, now starting to get delayed orgasm and extreme dry mouth.
positive side effects - well, I get a good nights sleep, but I always get that, but no pro social effects. One and half weeks more at 60, then off I go to 75mg. I now weight just under 75kg. I wonder if tapering up the dose is worthwhile at all, because all I have got is side effects for over a month - no wonder some people back out of having an Mao-i with the diet restrictions and just having side effects. If it starts effecting at 75, I would think that I might as well have just started at 75 - the side effects couldn't really be anymore than now, and at least i would have some benefit!!

I would try 75 mg for at least 2-4 weeks before going up to 90mg. But there is no harm in going to 90 if you are handling the side effects OK. I have heard that SA often requires higher doses of Nardil than depression does.

Phoenix 1 a question. Don't mean to intrude but something I've wondered for a long time is that if nardil is good for social anxiety why so long to work? Also if nardil is the golden standard of ad's which type of depression does one have to go one it? Is it the I think I'll stay in bed all day? Or an aggitated depression? Confused about this thanks. Phillipa

I am going to stay at 60 to complete a month at 60 before moving to 75. I want to stay for a month on 75 at least. I will be surprised if I need 90 considering that I am light but we shall see.

Phillipa,

Nardil works quite quickly for most people with depression. It can take higher doses and longer to work for SA. Just because it takes a while to work sometimes, doesn't mean anything about how effective it is. Time to onset of effects and effectiveness for SA aren't really correlated. (for depression, they seem to be loosely correlated).

It is supposed to be best at relieving "atypical depression" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atypical_depression) for a definition of atypical depression. Atypical depression is characterized by overeating and oversleeping so if you find yourself sleeping in bed all day you might have atypical depression. But if you check the link, you need other symptoms to be labeled as atypically depressed. But I believe Nardil works for regular unipolar depression too. I have no idea what my specific depression subtype is diagnosed as. But Nardil has been incredibly effective in resolving my depression for which I was hospitalized at one point. It also seems to work pretty darn well for me in relieving all different types of anxiety. I no longer need a benzo to prevent anxiety attacks.

Hope this helps!

I just read about atypical vs. melancholic depression and I seem to be a bit of a mix of both definitions. I'm going to ask my pdoc what he thinks I am...
