is my klonopin dose too high?

Posted by llurpsienoodle on February 1, 2008, at 17:48:15

I kept a log of my anxiety and reached 9/10 or 10/10 most days the last month. pdoc gave me 1mg klonopin 3x a day.

I know that's a lot, but is it a LOT?

what about if I have a perfect day and don't need it? can I just not take it one day, or would I land in detox uglies.

just wondering. I'm used to taking .5 -1mg a day

It's a lot to take in one day. I used to take 3-4 mg all in one shot at night. I was on that for 11 years. I finally went off it in November when I was in the hospital.

If you need 3 mg a day now, what will you do when your system gets used to it? How high will you go?

From my experience it takes more than one day to feel the effects from not taking it (maybe 2 or 3). But I think that would vary from person to person.

Try to stick to .5 mg a day if you can. Or find something else to help the anxiety like Seroquel or Zyprexa. CBT would also be very helpful.

Hi there

To me it does not seem that much.

I find it depends on my mental state, if I am manic I can tolerate 6mg's a day and it will not being me completely down. When I am not sometimes 0.5 to 1mg will send me to sleep. So if you are under a lot of stress at the moment or underlying the clonazepam is a nasty case of agitation it maybe that is just how much you need.

I am also lucky in that I have never really became tolerant to benzodiazepines and needs to increase my dose, as was initially predicted by my Doctors and I have been taking them since 1992. It is just as the severity of my condition changes I need to change the dose. Clonazepam is the most effective and I have found that if 15mg's of diazepam for 3 days dose not really help then increasing it wont help either.

I think it is a case as the Americans say of Your Mileage May Vary.

Take care.

James

I agree with you Maxime. 3mg. is getting up there in dosage; ashton would say equivalent to 60mg. valium. The least amount of any benzo that seems to help anxiety is the best amount, imho.

For me personally, 3mg was not oversedating, but it made my depression much worse. 3mg in the grand scheme of things is a lot, but there are many people out there on double that. As an anticonvulsant, there are people as high as 20mg. Not saying that's a good thing, but trying to put it in perspective. And it may be hard to reduce if you decide to lower or stop in the future. I would suggest you try to see what the minimum dose is you need to improve and be functional. Like you suggest, you can try just skipping a day here or there. That's what I did. It's not recommended, but since the half life is so long, you might be able to get away with it. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I take a minimum of 4mg a day. I've been on this dosage for about 6 months. Some days I have to take 6 mg if my anxiety is especially bad. I don't notice any ill effects. It;s like someone above said, it depends on how manic I am.

Of course lower is always seen to be better but not everyone's body chemistry is the same. I'd suggest you take the least amount you can take without feeling anxious.

Well. the good news is that my anxiety is lower. didn't get above a 6/10 today. boy this stuff is SO sedating.

Even better news is that my friends at starbux sold me coffee on a discount ((((((friends))))))

I KNOW the coffee is not good for the anxiety, but I've tried going with green tea alone, and less klonopin and I was still terribly paralysingly anxious.

best to you all,

Hi Marsha

So you take 4mg of Klonopin plus Buspar? And weren't you starting Gabitril too? How are you doing with daytime anxiety, as that is quite the combo of anxiolytics. Is the combo working well for your anxiety? Are you on anything else?

No its not a lot. I'm stable on 3mg/day. Does alot more than 1.5mg ever did. Epileptics take up to 8mg+.

I also miss doses & notice no difference. I allways take my morning dose - first thing I think of in the morn is "take my meds". But when out and about, especially in the evening its easy to forget. As long as you have taken some that day you wont get withdrawals. As long as its only now & then. Also, if going out drinking in the evening then you could miss your evening dose anyway.

Sedation should dissappear, or at least become manageable with time.
And your right, coffee isn't good, esp in the long run. Tiredness could also be backlash from the caffein.

No, I'm not on Gabitril anymore. I was only ever on 4 mg anyway (standard dose starts at 32mg) so I don't think I am missing it. My anxiety is okay some days and horrible right now. I think the Buspar might be helping some. It seems like some days I am a little better and other days it seems to be doing nothing at all.
I am also on Geodon 80 mg day, Celexa 10mg a day and Trazadone 100mg at bedtime.
