A few Selegiline (l-deprenyl) questions, please.

Posted by amigan on January 18, 2008, at 10:16:53

Hi.
I am new to this medication and i would like to ask you a few questions about it.

1. How long does it last? I know that its half-life is 2 hours, but being a _Irreversible_ MAOI, i believe that the half-life is rather irrelevant..

2. Is it safe to combine a low dose of Selegiline with Fluoxetine? It seems that there is an argument about this. Some people say that it's dangerous, some that it's safe.
If you read the leaflets of both meds, you will see that they contradict each other, thus they are officially contradicted!
On the other hand, i have read that a few people in this board combine them without experiencing serious side effects.
What do you think?

3. Same as question 2, but replace "Fluoxetine" with "Moclobemide". (Aurorix/Manerix)

4. I read that at high doses, it acts just like Parnate. How much should i take to achieve a Parnate-like effect? How safe is it?

Thank you.

I forgot to include question #5:

Oral or sublingual?: (Yes i know that there is a patch too)

a. I read that sublingual administration requires MUCH lower doses, (something like 2-3 mg's, instead of 10) because this way the drug is not destroyed by the gut's MAO. So it might be good for your pocket!
BUT, sublingual administration could be less stimulating, because the body doesn't metabolize the drug into CNS activating substances, like it does in oral administration.

b. Are dietary restrictions necessary on high doses sublingually, like they are orally?

Sorry this is all i can answer for now,but first let me say from what i personaly know, just me,

Im not speaking of emsam,i dont this drug.

U.S Based deprenyl, caps, etc dont seem like much help at any dose, this i can attest to from use.

The only version other than possably emsam? i personaly used is liquid deprenyl.

Liquid deprenyl goes best kept at the lower dopamine producing end,and with a benzo, prefably klonopin as i personaly found them to for whatever reason connect.

If you want to go higher and create a more general parnate maoi effect, then liq deprenyl would not be your choice,i doubt anyone could afford that anyway.

SSRIS never seemed to do well with deprenyl,if u do try this,id recomend the liquid so u can start with drops tiny eye drops and see how it goes rather then using a higher pill or patch form.

If i dident get your question right sorry, just passing through fast for the moment.

My understanding is that Selegeline does not exhibit MAOI- like properties until a dose of around 15 mgs. I have taken it safely with Cymbalta for quite some time at 5 - 10 mgs.

I believe the previous posters have been informative. Not much I can add. Selegiline liquid in my experience is smoother yet more powerful than oral. I'm not sure if the dose is 10mg or 15mg, but somewhere within that range is when the serotonin MAOI kicks in. Up until that point it is just working on dopamine and norepinephrine. While the risk of serotonin syndrome or neuroleptic malignant syndrome is always present with any drug combination, the risks are probably very low below 10mg if combined with a ssri.

I took 5mg oral deprenyl years ago along with prozac, but only for one week. It was just way too stimulating for me, almost to paranoia.

I'm not sure but I think the MAOI action of deprenyl takes 3 to 5 days to wear off. Last time I tried it, got over agitated, and stopped, it felt like maybe somewhere in the 4 to 6 day window I had returned to baseline. My judge was the orange stain from cigarettes on my finger. Deprenyl caused it to become in one day a very deep orange/brown almost flourescent that you could see even from a distance away. I've noticed other smokers with a stain, but not like this one was! I knew something strange was going on. Anyway, that scary looking stain returned to being a faint whitish/yellow barely noticeable stain about 6 days later. I figured at that time whatever deprenyl had been doing was over.

This is the end of the thread.
