Caffeine and Klonopin

Posted by Bonnie_CA on December 30, 2007, at 0:44:31

I don't take Klonopin very often. Yesterday, I took 1 mg of it, mostly because I seem to be tearing through my Xanax since I've been at my in-laws'. Today, I had a cup of coffee, and I became so agitated and aggressive, I felt like I was losing my mind. Has this ever happened to anyone? Caffeine and any medication inducing aggression?

Caffeine and Klonopin were not a good mix for me either.

I have no good explanation for the interaction but I know it happens with me mixing the two and doesn't happen when I don't mix the two. It felt to me the caffiene effects were potentiated by the Klonopin. Caffiene never horribly upramped my anxiety symptoms unless I was on K.

I found it very stange...

I've been off benzos for quite some time now and very much enjoy my leaded java.

Yeah, what's weird is that I can drink caffeinated sodas, and it's no problem. Perhaps it's something other than the caffiene in coffee? I had some "lightly leaded" coffee the other day, and I felt a bit crazy then too. (My MIL can't take fully leaded.) I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!

I drink coffee every morning after taking my alprazolam and it never bothers me. I wonder if it's just the klonopin?

I dink lots of caffeine, in fact I normally take Vivarin (200 mg caffeine tablet) in the am along with Klonopin and Provigil.
Caffeine does affect some antiseizure meds, though not Klonopin. That may only be relevant to its antiepileptic and not other effects of course.
i found that ritalin cancelled out Klonopin, but that is the only interaction I've observed.

It is. I've been taking Xanax too. The reason I've been taking Klonopin here lately is because I've been tearing through Xanax... think I'm building tolerance. I love Xanax, it really does work the best for my panic. Klonopin just does so much weird stuff other than what I've posted about. But, I'm going to run out of Xanax and I'm afraid I'll be accused of abusing it. *sigh*

I take Lamictal, and without Klonopin I've never had any adverse reactions with coffee and Lamictal. However, I also wonder if it's the combo of caffeine, Klonopin AND Lamictal that's making that paradoxical reaction. Technically, I'm not supposed to take Klonopin. It's an old prescription, and I explained in my post to Abby why I've been taking it lately.

I take between .5mg and 1mg of Klonopin every night. And most mornings I have 2 or 3 shots of espresso (fully loaded). I have no problems that I can report to you guys. I know that different drugs affect different people differently.

My mix of medications could be making a difference in the way it affects me, I don't know.

Currently:

Cymbalta 60mg in the am
Wellbutrin XL 300mg in the pm
Klonopin .5 to 1mg in the pm
and
Sotalol 180mg in am and pm (It's a beta blocker + an anti-arrhytmic drug.)

Who knows? Maybe the Sotalol, that keeps my heart rate at normal, mitigates the bad effects of Klonopin + coffee?

I guess that just goes to show you that everyone has a very unique response to meds. I'm on Lamictal, Klonopin and Effexor. The Konopin makes me extremely tired so I drink coffee in the mornings to get my energy back and don't have too many problems with it.
