Is a washout period required switching MAOIs?

Posted by Bearfan on December 3, 2007, at 16:31:50

I am planning on trying Emsam, and was wondering if I took it (and decided to go off), could I immediate go off it to try Nardil, or is there that same 14 day waiting period? Since it is the same class, could I just switch from one to the other?

Good question, and I'm not sure if I know the answer, but aren't they both MAO inhibitors? If a washout is needed at all, it would be fairly short? The only thing I can think of is that selegiline is metabolized into some sort of amphetamine which might react with Nardil. This is one for a psychiatrist to answer...

I switched from Parnate to Nardil with no washout period and had no ill effects. You can switch from one to the other.

All the literature says you still need the 2 weeks. You may be alright or you may not.

When I switched from Nardil to Marplan (the 1st time) I was impatient & started Marplan after 5 days. I felt fine until day 3 when I started getting high temperature, teeth clenching, blurry vision, unsteadiness, etc. It lasted a few days. Mild Serotonin Syndrome? I dont know, but it was definitely an interaction of some sort.

No wash out is necessary to go from Emsam to Nardil. I did it and was on Abilify too and kept the Abilify as I transferred from Emsam to Nardil.

Good luck with Nardil or whatever MAO you try.

According to EMSAM's package insert:

"EMSAM can cause serious and potentially life-threatening reactions if used with certain other medicines. Do not take the following medicines while using EMSAM, and for 2 weeks after stopping EMSAM:"

The first item listed is:

"Other medicines used to treat depression (antidepressants) including MAOI medicines."
