Sleep and anxiety problems

Posted by Bellame on December 2, 2007, at 18:04:58

I have not posted in awhile, but would love some input. I recently was treated for benzo and ambien addiction(severe!) and am 7 months sober. But I have terrible insomnia and trazadone or benadryl do not work. I know there are threads with seroquel but if someone could again give me their thoughts--dosage and is it worth taking because of side effects. I do have clinical depression and take prozac and lamictal as a mood stabilizer-I tried neurontin for anxiety but it did not help. Any thoughts about buspar or vistaril? I am a hard core insomniac and all the previous drug use only messed up my mind more. I would appreciate any input. I have talked to my psychiatrist but he kind of just shakes his head. My depression in only partially treated because I am so tired and non-motivated.

Seroquel at low dosages is good for sleep, so I have heard.

Zyprexa scares me because of weight gain and what are considered low doses of seroquel?

Between 25-75mg. I take 50mg and it knocks me out, but I am bipolar and should be taking dosages above 100mg but I choose not to. Higher dosages of seroquel can cause weight gain. Greater than 100mg. I know a few people who take 300-400mg of seroquel and it doesn't make them the least bit sleepy, but told me when they started at the lower dosages that it was the best sleep they have ever had.

Prozac and lamotrigine may be contributing to insomnia. Both of which can cause insomnia.

I would get off the lamictal, and replace with seroquel if you need mood stabilization.

Hello Bellame,

Elavil is a very good drug for sleep.
I take 50 mg two hours before bedtime.
In the daytime I am on Buspar.

Best of Luck,
X-ray

It sounds like your problem may be different, but when I take lamictal it causes severe insomnia--difficulty getting to sleep and being in a kind of twilight sleep (half asleep and half awake). I have researched this side effect and there are others who experience this as well. The only way I have been able to offset this has been by taking zyprexa which makes me sleep better.

Good luck with seroquel. It definitely makes you sleep well. I took it awhile back but don't remember the dosage I was on.

I take just 25 mg of seroquel at nite and it really helps with sleep.
