MS Symtoms and Withdrawal Symptoms from Lyrica

Posted by pixie's mom on November 12, 2007, at 6:25:18

I have been taking Lyrica for about 1 year now for MS symtoms. I definitely know when it's time to take another because I get jittery, nerve vibrations and heart palpatations. It definitely helps the MS pain, but the time is getting less in between before I start getting these symtoms. I only take 1 in the morning and 1 at night. Anyone else notice this also?

Thanks, but no need to feel bad. I consider myself as one of the lucky ones and only have the mildest form of MS. No, the Dr. hasn't suggested any other med for this. I started out with having back problems that they said is the cause of MS, so instead of dealing with the back pain they put me on Lyrica which they said also helps with MS symtoms. I'm sort of at a loss right now what the problem really is.

Lyrica has a short duration of action. You should split your total daily dose into three divided doses instead of two. This will help.

Hi there,

I don't have MS, but I took Lyrica for a little over a year at 450mg/day. It really helped my ulnar nerve neuropathy more than any other medication. I weaned myself off Lyrica because of the weight gain it was causing. My withdrawal symptoms were so severe that my pdoc had to put me on a 4 week diazepam (Valium) taper. I became extremely agitated and depressed. I couldn't sleep for 4 days in a row - 0 hours of sleep. I was shaky, and the sweats alternating with the chills.

This drug is said to be only minorly habit forming in the monograph, but in my opinion it is every bit as habit forming as the benzodiazepines.

Just my 2 cents.

Sonic

I totally agree with sonic that this drug is very habit forming. I tried to get off it and it just made me feel as though the MS symptoms were worse. I'm back on it because it does help with the pain in my back and MS symptoms. I definitely can tell when it's time to take another one. I haven't had any weight gain, but I've always been thin and it's hard for me to gain weight. Some people wouldn't call this a problem, but it's just as bad as trying to lose weight.
