Any Nardil questions?

Posted by F00TBALL on September 12, 2007, at 13:58:38

I've seen both the worst and the best this drug has to offer, from experiencing a Serotonin syndrome to ultimately having massive improvements in anxiety/depression.

So if anyone has any questions related to this drug, I'll do my best to answer them.

I have some questions for you:

1. How long did it take for you to feel benefits from the medication? How long did it take for your to feel really good?
2. What side effects were the most bothersome and how long did they last?
3. Are you on any other medications with the Nardil?
4. Did the Nardil really take of the anxiety as I have heard?

Hi, and thanks for the offer....

Is Nardil your first experience with an MAOI?

Do I recall that you started Nardil last spring, and have you remained on it all this time without stopping?

I am very happy for you that you are doing so well!

Janet

Well, I'm confused.

I don't know what the two prior posters are even talking about.

I thought F00TBALL had something to say about Nardil here. Where is F00TBALL?

I'd like to know his experience w/ Nardil and whether or not there was weight gain.

tks, 5f

I have severe social anxiety disorder,GAD and dyshymia for many years.I have tried many drugs of different classes but none of the symptom has improved so far and i am further troubled by side effects of the drugs.I have not tried Nardil though because MAOIs are not approved in my country. But,i am pondring about getting it from outside through my psychiatrist after reading good revies of the drugs here and elsewhere despite its bad side effects.Did you have social anxiety? If yes then since when and how many drugs you had tried before Nardil.I would not mind worse side effects then existing drugs give me,if nardil gives me at least modest improvement in my symptoms.Your response would be highly appreciated.Thanks.

Football I've had great alleviation of symptoms on 75mg then 90mg. But now I think it might be fading. Side effects that show no sign of going away are weight gain (on stomach) and complete sexual dysfunction. Also my sleep is shallow

1. About four weeks at 60 MG. Two weeks at 75 MG
2.
Urinary retention: lasted about 3 weeks once I got to 60 Mg
Tremors in arms and legs: started around 45 MG, got worse as I increased the dose, stopped after about 4 weeks at 90 MG
Blurry vision/no vision when standing or walking: Started at 60 MG, at it's absolute worst for first couple weeks at 75 MG.

3.Provigil. I originally started taking it because Nardil made me so tired, but now I'm taking it mainly because it helps with memory and concentration.

4. It completely wiped out my depression and general anxiety, and I'd say about 75% of my social anxiety.

Yep, first MAOI

I was taken off it for a few weeks after the Serotonin syndrome and had to go through slowly increasing the dose and all the terrible side-effects all over a again.

From what I've read, weight gain seems pretty common with Nardil, BUT I actually ended up losing about 15 pounds, so it really could go either way for you.

"Did you have social anxiety? If yes then since when and how many drugs you had tried before Nardil?"

3 o4 SSRIs, Cymbalta, Effexor, Welbutrin, Adderall, and Abilify.

"I would not mind worse side effects then existing drugs give me,if nardil gives me at least modest improvement in my symptoms."

That's how I felt, too. And the side-effects aren't permanent, they do go away in time.

Thanks.I have visited the site many times before and i read that Nardil is gold standard for social anxiety disorder. But,problem is that no MAOI is approved in India for any disorder and my psychiatrist is not interested in getting them from outside since he thinks it is old drug and with terrible side effects and he says that is why indian health authorities have not approved MAOI for treating TRD or social anxiety. Thanks anyway.

YES!! In fact I just posted one. I started taking it about 3 weeks ago, and just today at 45mg I'm noticing an improvement, but the carb/sugar cravings are unbearable. I've literally eaten 4 full sized desserts today. I'm already overweight and can't afford to gain any more weight. I also notice an uncontrollable urge to sleep at various intervals throughout the day. Mood is better but I'm still forgetful and suffer depression related cognitive issues.

> I have some questions for you:
>

It took me about six weeks. I worked up to 60mg/day slowly and got full effect about 10 days after I started that dosage.

> 2. What side effects were the most bothersome and how long did they last?

For me, all the side effects would come and go constantly, with no rhyme or reason.

The most bothersome side effect was definitely insomnia; it's the only one that might have made me stop taking the Nardil, but I coped with insomnia successfully using Klonopin/Ambien/Lunesta/etc.

Sexual inabilities, difficulty urinating, stomach acid, rashes, low blood pressure (i.e. dizziness when standing up), and weight gain were all problems.

It was a damn unpleasant drug to take, but I kept with it for three years because the positive effects definitely outweighed the negatives. I'd rather be fatter, have trouble peeing and screwing, etc., than lie in bed all day feeling guilty. Nardil made me bounce out of bed in the morning, full of life and optimism, ready to face the day.

> 3. Are you on any other medications with the Nardil?

I was on Klonopin as needed.

> 4. Did the Nardil really take of the anxiety as I have heard?

It didn't do a whole lot for my anxiety, in general, although it's hard to say for sure.

A couple comments...
-45 MG is considered to be a pretty low dose. Your mood and depression-related problems should continue to improve at a higher dose.

-See if you can get prescribed Provigil. I had that same sleeping problem, where I would be fine one minute, and exhausted the next. I've also noticed that like other stimulants, Provigil tends to make you less hungry. Is it strong enough counter the Nardil? I don't know, I didn't have the sugar/carb cravings as a side-effect, but it should at least help. And finally, Provigil has had a big impact on my memory/concentration. That's why I still continue to take it despite no longer needing it for the random periods of exhaustion.

I'm not on Nardil. I'm on Abilify, Provigil, and Xanax. But, I have sugar/carb cravings so badly that's all I eat. I've lost about 5lbs I think.

What is happening in my brain that causes these sugar/carb cravings?

I've never ever had it this bad!

Afa my life .. I am going through a break-up, but it's more than this, I feel it .. it's physical.

I can get a Payday and take a bite and it's like 'omgosh I'm in heaven'!

What is it w/ this? What can we do? Too many people I see are having the same problem.

I have health bars and cashews stashed in my bed side drawer o_o
