Is it depression

Posted by ricardo on September 8, 2007, at 17:30:10

Hi Everyone!
It's been quite a while since I last posted here... After taking ADs for about a year, I felt OK and went off all of them. I had a few bouts every now and then (including a big one), but somehow I went through without medication, just therapy. Now I think I need to take something, since I'm feeling really unwell. I have an appointment with a psychiatrist this Monday. I guess I have all symptoms of clinical depression, and I've been like this for over 3 weeks. However, my depression always has an strong element of fear. There are specific fears (which many people would certainly defined as irrational) which totally dominate my thoughts. Irrational as they may seem, they feel real to me. My question is, does depression often include irrational fears, or cause you to be totally overwhelmed by very negative thoughts you just have no control over? Or do I really have problems--real problems-- (which are causing all those fears) and my feeling bad about them is just reality, not depression? Sorry my being so unclear, but the truth is, I feel miserable but my sadness seems to stem from something real (even though it's difficult to realize how real it is).
Many thanks,
Ricardo

And you have no idea where it is coming from if you feel it is real? Phillipa

Hi!
When I talk to somebody about my fears, they say they're childish fears--not real problems. As a matter of fact, I feel really embarrassed about talking about them, since, deep inside, I know what kind of reaction I'm going to get. Either that, or because I don't want to be pushed into "dealing" with my fears.

For many folks, a course of AD's in conjunction with therapy is more beneficial than either treatment by itself.
It sounds as if sharing your fears with a professional might help you analyze their nature.
Certainly anxiety and depression can go hand in hand, both having chemical origins. I suspect that if we have "issues" that are not necessarily related to an organic condition, taking an AD does not make them go away.

Sounds like you know or at least have plenty of outside input into the seriousness of your fears.
So what are you going to do about it ?

Ricardo, my therapist and this is her opinion not mine although in my case I agree, said that depression can result from anxiety that is left untreated. Years of anxiety that goes untreated and is suppressed can often result in depression and that is what you finally go to the doctor for and they see a depressed person and treat that not the underlying anxiety as well. Could this apply to you? It did to me. I had terrible anxiety and panic attacks but suppressed them and finally the depression that hit left me unable to function. That is when I finally sought help but it took a year and six months before the anxiety issues where discovered. Maybe you are only just now discovering this about yourself. And I agree it is hard to talk about especially to people that don't suffer from it. You cannot just push it away. You did that already too long. You need to talk about. Maybe you can understand the source of the anxiety.
