alcohol and antidepressants

Posted by nickguy on August 22, 2007, at 15:38:24

I've searched the archives for topics on this but found conflicting views and no real studies or evidence. I'm quite curious as to how much the consumption of alcohol interferes with the action of antidepressants. I've tried many meds in the past and haven't had success. (for depression) But during those time periods I drank heavily atleast once a week, and probably had 2-3 drinks on another night. So some alcohol one night, and a large amount on another night, each week. I wonder if that rendered many of those drugs ineffective? I'm not messing with the alcohol now, because I'm taking an MAOI- even in small amounts. I want to try to not drink at all, atleast for the first month or two on Parnate. But this is a controversial subject and I'm wondering if anybody can provide any studies, educated opinions, ect.

thanks.

is there any study/ experience where alcohol was known to keep the antidepressant from working?

or

Has anybody drank moderately while coming onto an antidepressant and still had positive results with the drug?

I haven't read much research on it either but my personal experience was that heavy drinking for me (binging maybe 2-3 times a week) made most of the SSRIs I was on at the time not very effective.

Did they (The SSRI's) ever work for you, during periods of abstinence or reduction of alcohol?

Also, what do you consider binge drinking? Drinking to the point of passing out?

Some wine or beer about four always put me to sleep, gave energy, and I felt full of energy the next day. Phillipa
