Posted by twinch on August 12, 2007, at 9:55:08

What might be some of the side effects of drinking alcohol while taking lamictal?

Thanks : )

Do you take lamictal for a boost to depression or for bipolar? Usually pdocs say no drinking with meds but I've noticed a lot of posters have one or two what does you doc say have you asked? Love Phillipa

I am one of those people who drinks on my meds.. I know that I probably shouldn't, and I'm probably making my depression worse by drinking, but for some insane reason I drink anyways. Lamictal doesn't have a warning about drinking, (all of my other meds do), but I have noticed that since being prescribed Lamictal, I get the 'shakes' the day after I drink.
It's very strange, kind of backwards actually. Most alcoholics get the shakes after a period of not drinking, the shakes come from alcohol withdrawl. Since I've been taking lamictal, I get these shakes but only in the morning after a night of drinking. If I don't drink, no shakes, I feel fine. When I drink, the next day I shake like a leaf. Very strange, and probably a sign that I should stop... stop something...

Drinking on Lamictal gives me the worst hangover ever. I can have one glass of wine, and I'm so hungover the next day. But I've also read that people can drink and be totally okay. My pdoc told me that I can drink. However, I want to point out, that I really couldn't drink on Celexa without getting dizzy, and I take Lexapro in addition to Lamictal. So, it could be that. But I didn't get body aches on Celexa like I do now on Lamictal.

I am bipolar. Im taking it to help with my depression. I haven't asked my pdoc about drinking with my meds. I choose not to drink. I was just wondering if lamictal had any bad side effects with alcohol.

thanks : )

Maybe if you want to have something, try a non-alcoholic beer, wine or champagne instead of mixing the high content of regular alcohol. Same taste just not the alcohol.

Hi

I have been on lamictal for years. I never had any problems with it and alcohol. I drink occasionally, 3 bottles of beer or a couple glasses of wine. Just drink in moderation and you should be fine.

Everyone has their own preference with this topic but personally having bipolar and using lamictal as a mood stabilizer and given the fact that alcohol can be somewhat a upper/downer effect especially when a hangover hits. I move for the efficacy of the mood stabilizer working on its own. Lastly, that's only my opinion and mine alone. I personally don't care to drink but I don't judge those who do wisely. Take care.

Yep. I also get headaches. The only time in my life
I had a migraine was after 2 beers + lactimal.

I am on 200mg lamictal. I get blackouts when i drink..im trying to drink VERY rarely..ie once a month. I feel ok.. i dont seem overly intoxicated to others or to myself..but the next day, there are huge chunks of things i cannot remember. A month ago, i insulted a friend and couldnt remember ANYTHING.. not even to this day..

another odd effect is that i feel happy the day after. i get shakes and pretty bad hangovers..but emotionwise, im always pretty chipper. while i drink, i tend to be hyper, grandiose, and talk a lot.. but thats not new. i havent had anything to drink at all in over a month..and right now..im craving it so badly.. ive added geodon to the mix..so im going to have to be VERY careful. maybe only one drink and see how it goes.

im almost laughing thinking about me... a manic drunk..off as little as 2 drinks sometimes..on lamictal and now geodon..with chipper hangovers and chunks of memory gone.. OY! and how i want to do it anyway. wellbutrin was actually the worst drug i drank with.. the day after depression was killer.

thats ok; im not offended =) bipolar disorder and substance abuse can be closely linked and drinking on meds can be dangerous so you were just looking out for your peers. my psych doc and therapist really werent even very happy about me drinking twice a month
