other parnate users/please help with sleeping pill

Posted by missjulie on June 29, 2007, at 20:25:37

Just finished week three and have received no noticeable antidepressant benefits at all, which was why I was prescribed this...calmer and flatter yes but that's it... maybe I need a dose adjustment? 30 apparently not much? see dr. in one week.
However I'm not going to make it if I don't get some sleep, I literally sleep maybe two hours in the early am after tossing and turning all night and have for 21 nights now. The novelty has more than worn off; I am DESPERATE to get just one night's sleep but very afraid to mix medications... I know many of you take prescription sleeping meds (seroquel?) but are any OTC sleep pills safe? (tylenol pm used to work great for me) but I am terrified to mix pills. If any brands are safe PLEASE let me know, I am at my wits end here exhausted.
ps) less serious but very annoying - does dry mouth ever go away. thank you all. missjulie

I would be careful of over the counter med's that could contribute to hypertensive crisis.

I have been told that low dose Seroquel is more sedating than higher doses, and so this is why a low dose may be prescribed as a sleeping med.

Julie,
I'm telling ya, take your whole dose before 9:00am and you should send your insomnia packing. Worked for me and I too did not sleep for 12 weeks! I had essentially no luck with sleep aids, but still experienced all their side effects. I was going psychotic! I went down from 60mg to 30mg and *think* I am now experiencing AD effects. So am going to stay with Parnate for a while - who knew? I was so anxious to get this poison out of my system, but I think it was just too high of a dose taken at the wrong time of day.
Good luck
of course talk w/ your doc first...

Hi missjulie,
I have used MAOIs for most of the past ten years. Be assured, you are not alone. Most users of MAOIs will have to take another medication for insomnia. Over the counter straight Benadryl or the generic diphenhydramine hydrochloride will work for most people if not taken on a nightly basis. Make sure there is nothing else added to the medication; read the fine print. This antihistamine is known to cause severe sleepiness in most people. It is safe with MAOIs as long as no other medications, such as a decongestant are added to it. Over the years I have taken trazodone, Seroquel, benzos and other sleep aids. Sometimes you have to switch them around to avoid building tolerance. For me 12.5 to 25mg of Seroquel was the best, but sometimes I would still be drowzy in the morning from it. Benadryl has this effect on some people also.
Sleep well,
Jedi

I've just increased my dose of parnate to 20 mg..I take 25 mg of serequel .75 zopiclone .05 mg clonazapam at nite and sleep like a log..in fact it seems like the parnate has increased the effects of my nite meds, which has up to now been petering out, so am going to start by decreasing the zopiclone..this combo works well for me, and if I can still sleep with less meds at nite, so much the better..

I found the low dose of serequel to be very helpful not only for sleep but to give me some evenings anxiety free..

THANK YOU ALL! SOPHIA, :) PLS. KEEP US POSTED! (nm)

So your max dose is 30 once a day?but all at the same time?

Is that correct, because if it is,and 30 mg single dose is a lot to you, then i think i am totaly using this med wrong,a single 30 mg dose would be the least single effective dose for me id even use,as a single tab or 20 seem wo worsen me.

As for the first poster,if you are having these problems, jedi is right on and you will need to decide to either go 100 percent on with sleeping aids,or discontinue, because even a good night here or there, parnate will almost indefiantly give insomnia.

When I was on Parnate, I had problems with insomnia for about a month or so, but after about 6 weeks, I was fine. Also, I felt a profound antidepressant effect after about a month.

I found that if you take the full dose before noon, you will have far less sleeping problems. Benadryl is perfectly safe, and effective. For me, melatonin works the best (better than benzos, etc) You have a lot of options, just ask your Doc. Good luck!
