Weight issues + meds...

Posted by SheilaC on June 26, 2007, at 6:39:28

Are there any meds that I can use as a mood stabilizer that won't cause weight gain?

I tend to do pretty good with Xanax or Klonopin, but my doc really wants me to take a mood stabilizer.

I've had bad reactions to Lamictil and Topamax so those are out (I wish they weren't!).

Also - I tried Depakote ER 250mg and it made me hot and I had trouble sleeping, but I didn't notice any hunger issues (actually made me nauseous so I didn't binge). After sweating and tossing and turning several nights I stopped taking it.

Is there anything I can take as a mood stabilizer that won't make gain more weight?

Gee I took lamictal and know it's weight neutral why can't you take that one? And why the mood stabalizer bipolar or to enhance an antidepressant? Love Phillipa

Well, you already know that you can't take the two known to be weight-friendly, so you do have a bit of a puzzlement... The best I can come up with, off the top of my pointy little head, is to start thinking of combinations...

What is your dx? Are you BPI or BPII, or is this more depression with comorbid anxiety? And are you on any other medications? All of those can impact the decision about drugs.

My first thought is to combine a mood stabilizer with Wellbutrin, to see if that minimizes any weight gain. Unfortunately, that's about the level of suggestion I'm coming up with right now... Maybe a little more time to think, and a little more information will allow me to be more useful. And there are a lot of people here who will offer better suggestions than I can right now, anyway.

I'm also curious, though: if you do well with Klonopin or Xanax, why does your doctor want to switch you? (That's my dorky "if it ain't broke..." side coming out...)

Good luck.

Hi Racer, thanks. My doc is going to let me try Rispedal. I am BP II. I really need help with a good nights sleep, plus irritability and anxiety. Hopefully the Risperdal will help with that.
