Dopamine Agonists and Geodon together??????????

Posted by cactus on June 25, 2007, at 16:26:26

ok, long story but about 4 months ago I was put on ropinirole(requip/repreve) for restless leg syndrome. Little did I know the full extent this drug was to have on my life. It has been amazing, not only did it stop my night time funky leg action dead in it's tracks but it also snapped me out of poor concentration and residual depression that I didn't realise I was still suffering from. It also gave me the courage to face my alcoholism and stop drinking. I haven't touched a drop in over 9 weeks. Withdrawal was rather unpleasant but i got through it and i have been doing really well until 2 weeks ago, then my brain reactivated and lets just say it's been terrible. I feel like I have multiple tv channels running in my head at once and there's static buzzing around and my concentration has gone to the dogs. I went to see my GP yesterday and he gave me geodon. Neuroleptics and DA's are not meant to be taken together. I told him this and he still urged me to take it. I got the scrip filled and it clearly says on the PI sheet do not take with dopamine agonists or other anti parkinson drugs. So I rang my pdoc who I'm going to see in a couple of hours. I can't believe i didn't even think to call him, that's how muddled I have become. I have also realised that this is how I was feeling as a teenager and why I started to drink in the first place. The only thing that shut my head up was the booze. I'm not manic, or hearing voices and I have been on 2 AP's in the past that didn't nothing for me except make me fat and obnoxious(zyprexa and seroquel) So peoples what the hell do you think? AP's have turned me into a walking zombie in the past and that is not somewhere I would like to go again. Any other suggestions?? I don't think I need AP's, I think I need something else to help me focus, not put me back into oblivion.

Sorry trouble having trouble understand your thread you're saying requip was good? And it helped you stop drinking. Then all of a sudden after going through withdrawal from the booze the doc wants to put you on an antipsychotic and the two drugs are contraindicated together. What I'm haveing trouble with is this TV station stuff did you take the meds together what happened to cause the need for an antipsychotic the nondrinking? Love Phillipa

no I haven't taken the geodon yet, but since I quit drinking my mind has become very noisy, like having multiple tv station running at the same time and I can't focus. It's like various trains of thought running simutaneously and I keep switching from one to the other to the other. Around in circles, which keep speeding up. Well I'm off to my pdoc now. I'll be back later.

DA's and AD's

well my pdoc went purple when i told him what my GP prescribed. So he gave me zoloft. Oh well only one ssri left on the list to try now. I have to admit though I haven't had a bad reaction to this so far. Usually after my first dose of any SSRI my jaw starts to tremble and I get the sweats/shakes, terrible anxiety and I can't stop yawning, etc.... I swore after I came of efexor xr almost 2 years ago that I would never touch another SSRI/SNRI ever again. Maybe the ropinirole is helping and the fact that I'm not drinking anymore. Maybe a dopamine agonist with a SSRI is going to be a good combo for me. Now the waiting game begins.

I have a similar problem. I find the best thing to do is drink one drink. And everything is ok, don't need the extra medicine.

Alcoholism, SSRI's DA's and anorgasmia

> I have a similar problem. I find the best thing to do is drink one drink. And everything is ok, don't need the extra medicine.

The entire point of being an alcoholic is that I can't have one drink at all. One is too many and 100 is not enough. I know for a fact that if I have one drink I'm a total gonner because I can't stop myself drinking into a blackout or a stupor. I don't think you understood my post but I hope that makes it a bit clearer for you.

Anyway day 3 of the zoloft has been ok, the yawning and anxiety have begun but it's mild so far. I really do think that ropinirole helps to counteract SSRI side effects that I have suffered in the past and the fact that I'm no longer drinking. My pdoc thinks that my anxiety/GAD, depression and social phobia contributed majorly to my drinking in the first place. I could never go out socially without having a few drinks because I'd usually have choking panic or vomit from anxiety.

Another amazing thing that has happened is no sexual dysfunction at all. One single dose of any SSRI instantly leads to anorgasmia within hours. I know for a fact that ropinirole counteracts this and for me it couldn't be more true. So anyone out there having problems in this department, have a chat to your Dr about it and maybe a good sex life on SSRI's could be possible for you too. Peace peoples, it's so good to be in a happy place again.

If you have any questions and don't want to post just babblemail me

Cactus, what you are describing sounds exactly like what I felt on too high an AP dose, have you all thought about just backing off the dose of requip to see what happens?

When my AP was too high and made me crazy I had to quit all together, and start again on it slowly, now it works beautifully. Id say try that, dont give up on it, specially if it helps like that with the alcohol issue, I know that one is a bitch. there are certain people who will jump on this statement, and i really dont want to hear it, okay? but it sounds like too much dopamine, you have to move that stuff around very carefully.

(and critics, please know that i know its not actually *moved around* thats a dumb, easy way to say what im trying to say)

Really, best of luck cactus,

Suzie

Oops, forgot what I was gonna say which is, just in MY opinion, the last thing Id do personally is ADD an AP. It sounds more like a dosing issue to me.

Good luck

thanks for that but I decided to go with an AD instead of an AP, I didn't end up touching the geodon in the end and now I'm on day 4 of zoloft. I'm feeling much better already

Great! That, in the end is of course what matters most. Hope you continue to feel better.
