Last Friday, my counselor called to set up my next appointment. She then told me how she had this painful tooth. She'd broken it in half eating a sandwich. It was so painful, she wondered if I had any pain medication or knew of "someone" who had some. I told her that I was sorry but I didn't. She then said she was "searching" and thought I might be the one.
HUH? I am not looking forward to my appt on Monday. Should I be talking to someone over her about this? Is this ethical? Who should I discuss this with? I hope y'all can help, because not only do I have an appt with her, but my son does as well and I don't want him around her.

No, it's not ethical. I don't know what kind of counselor would ask such a thing of her patient. Seems to me a reason for distrust. If she really broke a tooth, then she ought to be able to get pain medication for it. Very strange, it seems to me.Best,

I agree it's unethical. Pain meds need to be prescribed by a doc or dentist and if it was just a broken tooth did it really hurt anyway? I wouldn't go back to her and maybe report to to her superior if she has one or the board of therapists? love Phillipa

Also, it sets a bad example. Would she tell you it was OK for you to ask one of your friends for a Xanax, or something, without talking to a doctor? If she was in that much legitimate pain, she shouldn't have had a problem getting pain meds from a doctor/dentist.
I don't know how close you are with her, but I wouldn't go back to her if I were you.

Thank You ALL who offered your advice. I was truly weirded out by this woman. I called the doctor who referred me to her and spoke with his nurse. (I'd trust her with my life) She told me to get on the phone to the counselor's supervisor. I did call and spoke to the "guy" in charge who was super nice and assured me that I had done EXACTLY right. (whew!) Then I got a call later from the lady who is the direct supervisor and she couldn't stop thanking me. LOL My son is now going to counseling with the "guy" and I will see the supervisor. She told me that there is an "obvious" problem with the person in question and it needs to be treated immediately. Most likely it will involve an intervention of some sort and her dismissal from this job. That is what I gathered between the 2 conversations. I DID give you guys the credit for all this. Thanks again, you all are just the best!!!

That's great, and took courage on your part. So glad you did it, and that you and your son still have people to counsel you. Refreshing that they reacted appropriately, instead of with defensiveness, disbelief or apathy, like sometimes happens. Excellent outcome.
This may be the best thing that's happened to the woman, really, and you can feel you played an important part in that. She sure seems to need some professional help for herself as soon as possible.
